Value chain analysis of Dairy sector in Bangladesh

Literature Review:
The dairy sector in Bangladesh has been undergoing gradual transformation due to increasing urban
demand and policy support. Several studies emphasize the importance of a strong value chain to ensure
sustainability and growth. According to Hossain et al. (2020), the integration of smallholder dairy
farmers into formal markets can significantly enhance income levels and improve milk quality. Their
study focused on the supply chain dynamics in the Bogura and Sirajganj districts, identifying critical
bottlenecks such as inadequate cold chain facilities, limited coordination among stakeholders, and weak
linkages between producers and processors. They highlighted that while many dairy farmers rely on
traditional practices, those with access to institutional buyers and cooperatives experienced better price
realization and reduced transaction costs. The research emphasized the need for policy intervention to
formalize milk collection systems and enhance transparency in pricing mechanisms.

In a separate study, Akter et al. (2021) explored gender roles within the dairy value chain in rural
Bangladesh. They found that women play a crucial role in on-farm activities such as feeding, milking, and
hygiene management, yet they remain underrepresented in decision-making and market access. The
study concluded that empowering women through training and access to inputs can significantly
improve household income and farm efficiency. Furthermore, Akter et al. stressed the need for inclusive
value chain development that accounts for gender equity and social empowerment.

These findings collectively underscore the importance of institutional support, inclusive market
structures, and investment in infrastructure to enhance the efficiency and equity of the dairy value chain
in Bangladesh.
