Introduction to Module
This course is an in-depth study that covers the fundamentals of interior design and decoration. It
will provide a thorough understanding of the elements of style and design, so that students can
successfully deconstruct and reconstruct any style effectively, making changes and adaptations to
reflect the individual preferences of the client. The students will discover the effects of applying
the design fundamentals in various situations and will learn how to achieve aesthetic harmony
through design.
Module Aims
The course aims at developing an understanding of students on applying the design fundamentals
effectively in an interior design setting. Specific aims of module are:
1. To gain a broad foundation of design fundamentals
2. To apply design fundamentals to develop an aesthetically pleasing and functional living
space
3. To recognize, organize, analyze, and solve design problems
4. To examine and evaluate materials used in design interiors to fulfil human needs and
expressions in a living space.
5. To develop an awareness of the impact of design decisions on the environment.
6. To understand and use the vocabulary and forms of expression that characterizes interior
design.
7. To integrate interior design learning with architecture design.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module student will be able to:
1. Understand space relationships within the context of interior design
2. Apply design fundamentals effectively within an interior design setting.
3. Examine and evaluate materials used in interior design and provide for personal
expression in a living space.
4. Effectively make furniture and appliance choices for a particular interior.
Teaching Methodology
Seminars and Exercises
Students will be familiarized with Interior Design in a seminar where critical discussions will be
raised followed by exercises related to the topic discussed. Students will be encouraged to ask
questions and participate in class discussions.

illusions in interior schemes
- Color Psychology – how and why colors affect our emotions
3 3 - Fundamental principles of interior design- unity, harmony and variety,
balance, proportion, scale, focal point and rhythm.

- What makes a style? – How to analyze and identify the key elements
of a variety of styles

- Factors that affect the selection and purchase of floor coverings
13 13 - Factors to consider when developing a floor plan- function of space,
cost, relationships between zones, traffic patterns, comfort features etc.
- Symbols used in floor plans- windows, stairs, doors, closets, fixtures,
etc.
- Factors that unify an interior environment
14 14 - Applying interior design knowledge in designing a defined space
15 15 - Final project
- Designing an interior scheme for a situation by following a design
brief and requirements provided by a particular client.
