Answer: 10

₱2.00, what percent (rate) was the discount?

Answer: 10%

D. Lesson Proper
I have here an example:

Ms. Alyssa was given a salary increase of 13%

for working diligently and competently. How
much was the increase if her original salary
was P21,000.00? How much will her salary be
after the increase has been effected?

 To solve the problem above, we need

to find out how much is 13% of
P21,000.00.
Then, we add that amount to Alyssa’s original
salary.

 To find out how much is 13% of

P21,000.00 is we need to multiply
P21,000.00 by 0.13 (percent converted
to decimal).

 Therefore, P2,730 is the increase

amount of Ms. Alyssa’s salary.

The problem above is an example of a percent

problem. There are three quantities involved in
a percent problem.

These are percentage (P), rate (R), and base

(B). These three quantities should be identified
to be able to solve a percent problem.

 The easiest to identify is the rate (R).

This value tells us what percent or how
many hundredths are taken. It has the

percent sign (%).

 The base (B) is the number that

represents the whole or 100%, or the
total. It is the number on which the
percentage is computed. and found after
the word "of".

 The percentage (P) is the result we get

after finding a certain percent of the

base, and found after the word "is".

To solve a percent problem, it is important to

identify all three quantifies; the two given
quantities and the unknown quantity. Use the
following formulas when solving for
percentage, base, and rate.

Percentage (P) = Base (B) x Rate (R)

Base (B) = Percentage (P) ÷ Rate (R)

Rate(R) = Percentage (P) ÷ Base (B)

Example: Find the percentage.

1. In the Homeowner’s Association election,
85% of the 120 qualified voters voted for Mr.
Ruiz. How many votes did he get?

Let us identify the three quantities:

Base = 120 (total number of qualified
voters)
P=BxR
= 120 x 0.85
Percentage = This is the unknown.
P = 102
Therefore, 102 voters voted for Mr. Ruiz

Another example, who wants to try?

1. Find the percentage.

What number is 7% of 80?

P = ? B = 80 R = 7% 90.07)

P = 5.6

2. Find the Rate.

What percent of 90 is 30?
R=P÷B
P = 30 B = 90 R =?
=30 ÷ 90 = 0.333…
* Change to percent R = 0.333… then affix
the % sign: 0.333… x 100 = 33.3%

3. Find the Base.

28 is 40% of what number?
B=P÷R
P = 28 B =? R = 40% (change to = 28 ÷ 0.40 (40%)

= 360 ÷ 0.10 (10%)

5. Find the Percentage (P):
A bag costs ₱800 and has a 20% discount. How
much is the discount?
P=BxR
= 800 x 0.20 (20%)
P = 160

6. Find the Percentage (P):

You got 85% on a test worth 100 points. How
many points did you get?
P=BxR
= 100 x 0.85 (85%)
