Scales and Dimensioning

Scale
It is the ratio of the linear dimensions presented in the drawing of an object to its actual dimensions.
BIS Recommended Scales

1. Engineers Scale (like10mm= 15m)


2. Graphical Scale: Scale is drawn on the drawing itself.
• Plain Scale
• Diagonal Scale
• Vernier Scale etc.

Representative fraction (R. F.)

Plain scale
A plain scale consists of a line divided into suitable number of equal units. The first unit is
subdivided into smaller parts.
Construct a scale of 1:4, to show centimeters and long enough to measure upto 5 decimeters
Diagonal scale
Diagonal scale is used to measure up to second decimal (like 4. 35 or m, dm and cm)

Dimensioning
There are two standard methods of dimensioning: aligned and unidirectional as presented in the
figure.
Some Common Features of Dimensioning:
ASSIGNMENT-IV:
Q.1 Draw a scale showing kilometer, hectometer and decameter to measure 5.77km.

Q.2 Draw both the front and top views (assume dimensions). Hence, do the dimensioning of the
object.
