ROCKS
AND MINERALS
Physical and Chemical Properties of Minerals
OBJECTIVES:
❏ Identify common rock-forming minerals using
their physical and chemical properties
❏ Differentiate rocks into igneous, sedimentary,
and metamorphic based on their physical and
chemical properties.

Physical and
Chemical Properties
of Minerals
1. Crystal Form and Habit
Crystal Habit
❏ This is the tendency for specimens of a
mineral to repeatedly grow into
characteristic shapes
2. Cleavage and Fracture
Cleavage
❏ This is the property of mineral that allows to break
smoothly along specific internal planes.
Fracture
❏ This is the property of mineral breaking in a
more or less random pattern with no smooth
planar surfaces
3. Luster
❏ This is the quality and intensity of reflected light exhibited
by the mineral.
4. Color and Streak
❏ Color is the color of the mineral.
❏ Streak is the color of a mineral in its powdered form.
❏
5. Hardness
❏ This is a measure of the resistance of a
mineral (not specifically surface) to
abrasion.
❏ This is a measurement of the strength of
the chemical bonds in its structure.

Activity no.2: MINERAL IDENTIFICATION
● Click on Mineral Identification to access
the simulation.
● Observe and measure the properties of a
mineral sample, and then use a key to
identify the mineral.
