Tutorial 10

1. There is a wire in the R2 plane which can be parametrized as γ(t) = (t3 − 3t, 3t2 ) where

t ∈ [2, 4]. The density of the wire at each point (x, y) is given by δ(x, y) = y.

(a) Find the total mass ∫ δ ds of the wire.

γ
(b) Find the average density of the wire (defined as the total mass divided by the total length).

2. Let C be the boundary of the triangle in R2 with vertices (0, 0), (4, 0) and (0, 3). Let
f (x, y) = x + y. Compute ∫ f ds.
C

3. Let C be the astroid in R2 with parametrization γ(t) = (cos3 t, sin3 t), where t ∈ [0, 2π]. Let
⎛ 1 2 ⎞
F(x, y) = √ ,√ . Compute ∮ F ⋅ ds. (You may ignore the unboundedness of F at
⎝ 3 x2 y 3 xy 2 ⎠ C
some points on γ.)

4. Let C be the part of the intersection of the cylinder x2 + y 2 = 4 and the plane 2x + 2y + z = 1
with y ⩾ 0 oriented from the point (2, 0, −3) to the point (−2, 0, 5). Compute ∫ (−y, x, z) ⋅ ds.
C

5. Let F be a continuous vector field on Rn . We say that F has path-independent line integrals
if
∫ F ⋅ ds = ∫ F ⋅ ds
C1 C2

for any simple, piecewise C , oriented curves C1 and C2 having the same initial point and
having the same terminal point.

(a) If F has path-independent line integrals, prove that ∮ F ⋅ ds = 0 for any simple, piecewise
C
C 1 , closed curve C in the domain of F.
(b) Suppose F is a gradient field. Prove that F has path-independent line integrals.

Additional problems:

6. Compute each of the following line integrals.

(a) ∫ f ds where γ ∶ [−1, 1] → R2 is defined by γ(t) = (3t2 , 2t3 ), and f (x, y) = 3 + x
γ

(b) ∫ F ⋅ ds where γ ∶ [−1, 1] → R2 is defined by γ(t) = ( ∣t∣, 2t), and F(x, y) = (xy, x2 + y)
γ

(c) ∫ ( y dx + sin x dy + (xy − z) dz) where γ ∶ [0, 1] → R3 is defined by γ(t) = (t, 2t2 , 3t3 )

7. Consider a curve in R3 parametrized by γ(t) = (t, t2 + 1, √ ) where 0 ⩽ t ⩽ 2. Find the
