CHAPTER THREE

METHODOLOGY

This chapter gives a highlight of the methods and procedures applied in the collection and
analysis of data. It also constitutes of research design, population of the study, sample size,
research instruments, methods of data collection and analysis.

3.1 Research Design

This study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. Descriptive research design reduces
errors and bias in research. Hence, it is appropriate in ascertaining and giving reports the way
things are (Sekaran & Bougie, 2016). A descriptive survey research design is a research
approach that seeks to describe and analyze various characteristics or features of a particular
population, group, or phenomenon.

3.2 Study Area

Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), also known as Ogun State University, is a state-owned
university located in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, Nigeria. The university was founded on July 7,
1982, by the then governor of Ogun State, Chief Bisi Onabanjo, and was originally called Ogun
State University (OSU). The university was set up with the goal of providing higher education
and producing graduates who are capable of contributing to the development of the country.
OOU offers a broad spectrum of academic programs across various faculties, including arts,
education, science, social sciences, engineering, law, health sciences, and agriculture. The
institution is known for its commitment to research, innovation, and community service, which
are integral to its educational philosophy. It operates under the Nigerian university system and
awards both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The university's mission is to provide
high-quality, affordable education that caters to the needs of its diverse student population. Over
the years, OOU has made substantial contributions to the development of the local community
and the state of Ogun by preparing students to be future leaders in various sectors, both within
Nigeria and internationally. The university was established with a mission to provide quality
education to students and contribute to the development of the society.
3.2.1 Population of the Study

The population of the study will be Faculty of Social Sciences which consists of 3471 students
(Olabisi Onabanjo University, 2025). The population of study will be assumed to be students in
all departments in Faculty of Science in OOU (Olabisi Onabanjo University), this is because the
population of the study needs to be matured and knowledgeable and also have experience about
the subject matter.

3.3 Sample Size

Sampling size refers to the number of individuals, units, or cases that are included in a study or
research project. To get the exact sample size for this study, Taro Yamane formular will be

However, a sample size of approximately 97 respondents would be randomly selected


from the study population.

3.3.1 Sampling Frame

levels in the Faculty of Social Sciences, Olabisi Onabanjo University.

3.4 Sampling Technique

Stratified sampling techniques and simple random sampling will be employed in this study.
Stratified sampling is chosen because it enables the researcher to divide the entire population into
distinct subgroups or strata. Using both stratified and simple random sampling methods, a total
of 97 undergraduate students from the Faculty of Social Science will be selected. The
respondents will be chosen based on the total number of students in each department.
Specifically, 17 respondents will be randomly selected from the Mass Communication
Department, 16 from the Economics Department, 17 from the Sociology Department, 15 from
the Political Science Department, 16 from the Psychology Department, 8 from the Geography
Department, 4 from the Criminology Department, and 4 from the Library and Information
Science Department.".

3.5 Method of Data Collection


The study will employ a primary source of data collection, meaning that data will be gathered
directly from respondents. This will involve using questionnaires to collect relevant information
directly from the undergraduate students in Faculty of Social Sciences. Primary data ensures that
the information is specific to the research questions and allows for more control over the data
quality. By using this approach, the study aims to obtain accurate and relevant data directly from
the source, enhancing the validity and reliability of the findings.

3.6 Instruments of Data Collection

Questionnaires

The research instrument for this study will be questionnaire. A questionnaire is a research tool
featuring a series of questions used to collect useful information from respondents. The type of
questionnaire that will be used for the study will be closed-ended questionnaire. The section will
be divided into 2 parts. The first part will focus on the socio-demographic characteristic of the
respondents while the second part will focus on the objectives of the study. The objectives of the
study will have a closed-ended questions of Likert scale (Strongly Agreed, Agreed, Disagreed
and Strongly Disagreed.

3.7 Method of data analysis

Descriptive statistics will be used to analyze the data collected from the field by summarizing
and organizing the information in a meaningful way. This includes the use of tables, percentages,
and charts for data presentation, making the results easy to understand and interpret. The data
will be presented in a simple percentage format to clearly show the distribution of responses or
outcomes. SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) will be employed for coding and
cumulating the data, allowing for efficient processing, analysis, and interpretation of the
findings.

3.8 Ethical Consideration

The research process will prioritize the protection of individual rights and freedoms, ensuring
that respondents are not subjected to any form of pressure or bias. Strict measures, such as
obtaining informed consent, maintaining secrecy and confidentiality, and respecting the integrity
of respondents, will be implemented. The researcher will communicate the purpose of the study
to participants before the survey begins, emphasizing these ethical considerations to promote the
collection of truthful, reliable, and high-quality information.
