Understanding Note Values in Music

Note values in music indicate how long a note should be played, functioning like a clock to measure time. Each note value has a specific length in beats, with whole notes lasting 4 beats, half notes 2 beats, quarter notes 1 beat, eighth notes 1/2 beat, and sixteenth notes 1/4 beat. Understanding these values helps musicians determine the tempo of a piece.

What Are Note Values in Music?

Note values tell us how long a note should be

played or held in music.

Think of it like a clock for music—note values

measure time and help us understand how fast or
slow a piece of music should be played.

Each note value has a specific length, and these

lengths are measured in beats. The beats are like a
steady pulse or heartbeat in music.
Here are the basic note values and their
lengths (in a 4/4 time signature, which is very
common):

Length: 4 beats.
Imagine clapping once and counting "1-2-3-4" while
holding your hands together.
2. Half Note (𝅗𝅥):
Length: 2 beats.
Clap once and count "1-2," then clap again for "3-4."
3. Quarter Note (♩):
Length: 1 beat.
Clap once and count "1," clap again for "2," and so on.
4. Eighth Note (♪):
Length: Half a beat (1/2).
Clap twice in the time it takes to count one beat, saying "1-
and, 2-and."
5. Sixteenth Note (𝅘𝅥𝅯
):
Length: A quarter of a beat (1/4).
Clap four times in the time it takes to count one beat,
saying "1-e-&-a, 2-e-&-a."
