THESIS 2025 The Experiential Hertiage Centre, Lucknow

01
INTRODUCTION
An experience center , in the context of my design, is
not just a place to observe but a space to immerse,
engage, and create—a living environment where
people don’t just see history but become a part of
it. It is a bridge between generations, allowing the
cultural heritage of Lucknow to blend seamlessly
with contemporary experiences, ensuring that
traditional crafts, performing arts, and literature
are not just preserved but actively lived and
evolved.

This project is vital for Lucknow as it reimagines the

city’s rich legacy in a dynamic, interactive form,
making its artistic traditions relevant for the
present and future. Lucknow has long been a hub of
refined craftsmanship, poetry, and performing arts,
and this center will act as a catalyst in reviving and
sustaining these traditions, reinforcing the city’s
identity as a cultural landmark.

THESIS 2025 The Experiential Hertiage Centre, Lucknow

Lucknow as Heritage city
‘Lucknow’, is linked with the architectural beauties of ‘Lakhauri’
bricks, the aroma of ‘itra’, melodic notes, the sound of dancers’
trinklets, the sweetness of ‘dussheri’ mangoes,’malai’ and ‘gulab
revadis,’ and, of course, ‘Mehman Nawazi.’ Lucknow, also known
as the ‘City of Adab,’ is known for its refinement in speech,
entertainment, clothing, and manners. In fact, it is here that one
may truly experience hospitality in its purest form. Various
cultural elements have added to the richness of this one-of-a-
kind metropolis. The Urdu language must be mentioned. Gazals,
Shairi, expressive dance styles, and vibrant festivals are just a
few examples (Craft and Culture of Lucknow, no date) .

With the transfer of the capital from Faizabad to Lucknow in

1776, Lucknow became the focal point of a cultural renaissance.
It is under royal patronage. Kathak, Thumri, Khayal, Dadra,
Gazals, Qawalies, and Sher-o-Shairi were at their peak. Lucknow,
being a hub of Islamic study, saw the birth of the Lucknow
school of poetry, led by notable poets like as Anes, Dabeer,
Imam-Buksh ‘Nasika,’ and Mirza Mohd. Raza Khan Burq, Atish,
Mirza Shauq Asar, Josh, and others. Kathak is one of the most
well-known Indian dance traditions, and it is closely linked with
Lucknow. Under the patronage of the Nawabs of Awadh, this
pre-Mughal devotional dance technique evolved into a very
diversified dance genre. The Lucknow Gharana of Kathak is
reported to have been founded by Pandit Iswari Prasad Mishra
of Handia. When it comes to the festivities that make Lucknow
special, the Moharrum festival and Bada Mangal must be
mentioned (Craft and Culture of Lucknow, no date).

How can such spaces support local artists and craftsmen,

There is a pressing need for further research on how

experiential design can serve as a bridge between heritage
and modern engagement. While various heritage conservation
efforts exist, little has been explored about how spatial design
can actively involve people in cultural practices rather than
just showcasing them. More studies are needed to understand
how architectural interventions can create interactive,
evolving spaces where traditions are not merely displayed but
continuously adapted and reinterpreted.

The sketch is an interpretation of how the play of light takes place in the museums
through the skylights. Lighting and ventilation are provided by these top lights ( from the
concrete shells and from along the terrace parapets.)

The stairs are reminiscent of ghats; steps

found in Indian cities which lead down to
a body of holy water, just as Correa’s steps
guide the pedestrian to the lakeside.

Indeed, Correa cited the bathing ghats on the bank of the River
Ganges at Varanasi as a stylistic influence. At Bharat Bhavan the
steps guide the pedestrian to the lakeside; the religious
connotations emphasizing the sacred nature of this pathway.

The sunken courtyards at Bharat Bhavan provide shade from the

scorching midday sun, while the raised terraces offer refreshing air
and space at cooler times of day. This climate-control solution was
lifted directly from India’s architectural history, inspired by the
courtyards and terraces of the Red Fort at Agra.
