A. Water Distribution System

Pumps are an important part of any water distribution system, such as agricultural irrigation
networks and water storage facilities in tall buildings. Proper selection of pumping equipment
that provides the best performance requires a thorough understanding of existing conditions.
Before selecting the appropriate pump and operating parameters for a given system, it is
important to understand the design constraints, the operating conditions of the water distribution
system, and the flexibility required for system operation. Typical operating parameters that
engineer used to tweak the performance of a pump system are capacity, head, power, efficiency,
required net positive suction head, and specific speed.

B. Objective

For most farming area, water is required to be transferred to the water tank as shown in Figure 1
for irrigation purposes. To pump the water to the tank, a piping system is required to be designed
by identifying the relevant components such as pump, elbows, valves, pipes and other
appropriate fixtures that are to be placed at appropriate positions logically.

C. Analyses Requirement
Analysis needs to be done on the designed piping system by identifying all the possible losses to
determine the most suitable pump with suitable pumping power to achieve the lowest possible
operating cost. Assumptions made during the analyses must be justified.

D. Report Writing
A written report is required to be submitted. The report must be neatly typed up with no hand-
drawn figures or handwritten equations. Figures that are taken using digital camera and
reproduced in the report are strictly not allowed. The report should include, but not be limited to
the following chapters:
1. Problem descriptions.
2. Design parameters of the system.
3. Analyses
4. Discussion.
5. Conclusion.
6. References.

E. Tutor Assessment
Students are required to do a short presentation of your investigation and have a question and
answer (Q&A) session with the lecturer before the report is submitted.
