REFLECTION ON THE COACHING AND MENTORING SESSION

The recently conducted coaching and mentoring session at Manila Elementary School was a
meaningful opportunity for teachers to reflect on their professional responsibilities, teaching
practices, and adherence to the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers. The session
emphasized the importance of reviewing and aligning teaching strategies with DepEd policies,
existing laws, and ethical standards. As a facilitator, I found this experience highly enriching as it
allowed for open discussions, critical reflections, and collaborative problem-solving among
teachers.

One of the most significant takeaways from this session was the realization that regular self-
assessment and reflection are crucial for teacher growth. Teachers shared their experiences, both
challenges and successes, in handling classroom situations while maintaining professionalism.
The discussion on the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST) and RA 7836
(Philippine Teachers’ Professionalization Act) provided a clearer perspective on the expectations
and responsibilities of educators. It was evident that teachers are aware of their ethical
obligations, but at times, dilemmas arise that require careful decision-making. This session
provided them with a safe space to voice their concerns and seek guidance.

Another key insight gained was the impact of professional integrity on student learning and the
school environment. Teachers were reminded that beyond lesson delivery, their actions, words,
and decisions significantly shape students’ values and behaviors. Maintaining fairness,
confidentiality, and respect for all learners ensures a positive learning atmosphere. The session
also highlighted the importance of avoiding biases, handling conflicts professionally, and
building strong relationships with learners, parents, and colleagues.

The discussion on ethical dilemmas was particularly engaging. Teachers shared real-life
classroom scenarios where they had to balance discipline with compassion, authority with
understanding, and structure with flexibility. One recurring concern was managing confidential
student information while ensuring proper communication with parents and stakeholders.
Through guided discussions, we explored strategies to uphold professional ethics while also
prioritizing the well-being of students.

Moreover, the session reinforced the need for continuous professional development. Teachers
were encouraged to engage in action research, attend training sessions, and participate in
Learning Action Cells (LAC) meetings to enhance their knowledge and skills. The idea of
maintaining reflective journals was well-received, as it provides a personal space for educators to
evaluate their daily teaching experiences and identify areas for improvement. Collaborative
teaching approaches were also discussed, emphasizing that learning from peers is an effective
way to enhance instructional strategies.

One of the most promising outcomes of this session was the commitment of teachers to apply
what they learned. Many expressed their willingness to be more reflective and proactive in their
teaching practices. The agreements set, including self-assessment exercises, follow-up mentoring
sessions, and upcoming training seminars, will further support their professional growth.

In conclusion, this coaching and mentoring session served as a powerful reminder of the
importance of ethical teaching, continuous learning, and reflective practice. It reaffirmed the idea
that being a teacher is more than just imparting knowledge—it is about upholding the dignity of
the profession, nurturing young minds, and serving as role models for students. As a school
leader, I am committed to sustaining these meaningful discussions and providing opportunities
for teachers to grow in their profession.
