STRATIFIED RANDOM SAMPLING
The word stratify comes from Latin words meaning “to make layers” (Lohr, 2010). In stratified
sampling, the population is partitioned into regions or strata, and a sample is selected by some
design within each stratum. The selections in different strata are made independently, the
variances of estimators for individual strata can be added together to obtain variances of
estimators for the whole population. The principle of stratification is to partition the population
in such a way that the units within a stratum are as similar as possible (Thomson, 2012).
A geographical region might be stratified into some variable such as land use, elevation, land
form, and soil type. In this report, Stratified sampling is using slope class. The slope class is
derived from contour map using Digital Elevation Model (DEM).
To classify the slope, there is several classification system can be used to classify slope based on
map scale. The classification system is from Geomorphology survey and mapping system
(Bermana, 2006). In this report the slope class is defined from slope classification Zuidam 1985.
It suits for medium scale of map. It contains 7 class of slope.

Target population in study area is define using grid method. Minimum grid scale on map is 0.5
cm (SNI), then 0.5 cm is multiple with study area scale which is 1:150,000. So, the minimum
grid scale in the study area is 750 x 750 meters. Then, the grid area layer is overlay with study
area layer in Arcgis. With the result that, total grid for the whole study area is 240 grid, which is
it becomes as population.
The number of sample is define using Isaac and Michael table. The total population is 240. By
using Isaac and Michael table, researcher can define the number of sample way easier with error
level 1%, 5% and 10% (Sugiyono, 2012). In this study, we are using error level 5%. So, the
number of samples is 142 samples.
