Descriptive type Questions.

1. Answer the following

a. List the characteristics of second-generation computers.

Ans. Characteristics of second-generation computers:
• They used transistors.

• They were smaller, faster, cheaper, and more efficient than first-generation
computers.

• They relied on punched cards for input.

b. What were the limitations of first-generation computers?

Ans. The major limitations of first-generation computers are:

• Their operating speed was low.

• Their power consumption was very high.

• They required large space for installation.

• They were highly expensive.

• They could solve only one problem at a time.

c. How hve the advances in computer technology affected our modern day to day
lives? (write any 4 points)
Ans. Computer technology has become an important part of our lives. We
use and depend on computer technology in our daily lives to learn,
communicate, do business, travel, and live comfortably. Some areas where
advances in computer technology have a great impact are given below:

• People use the Internet and social media to exchange ideas. During
elections, political leaders use radio, television, and social media.

• Computers are used in offices to keep track of accounts, money, and for
making presentations.

• Students use computers for their projects and teachers use computers to
keep track of grades and type out instructions for their students.
Smartboards, computers, mobile phones, projectors, and the Internet are
also being used in the classroom.

• Hospitals and pharmacies use computers to keep a record of patients,

their medical history, and the medications they require. It helps research in
medical science.

• Computer graphics are used in different fields of arts and entertainment

and are developing day by day.

d. Make a list of the early calculating devices. Do we still use them today?
Ans. Some of the early calculating devices are listed below:

• Abacus
• Napier’s bones
• Pascaline
• Difference Engine
• Analytical Engine

Today, the Abacus is still used commonly in Japan, China, the Middle East,
and Russia. The use of abacus is still popular in some schools.

f. In fourth-generation computers, what do you think was the biggest advantage

for using microprocessors? Justify your response.
Ans. The biggest advantage of using microprocessors was that it contained
all the components of a CPU on a single chip which reduced the size of
computers and increased their efficiency.

g. Do you think that, in the future, artificial intelligence might replace teachers in
the classrooms? Give reasons for your answer.
Ans. I may define artificial intelligence as the ability of a machine to imitate
intelligent human behaviour. Although it is now being used in classrooms
in many countries of the world, however, it is not likely to replace teachers
in the near future. It will assist teachers and work significantly, the way
teachers teach and students learn.

1. Choose the correct option.

a . A …….. is similar to a TV screen.

i. VDU ii. Printer iii. Keyboard iv. None of these

b. A printed output is called the …………… .

i. Soft copy ii. Hard copy iii. Copy iv. None of these

c. The devices through which data and instructions are entered into a
computer are called ……….. .

i. Input devices ii. Output devices iii. Memory iv. None of these

d. Touch screens are used in a/an

i. ATM ii. Tablet iii. both i. and ii. iv. None of these

e. ……… is the result or the output given by a computer.

i. Information ii. Instructions iii. Data iv. None of these

Descriptive type Questions.

1. Answer the following

a. Which type of memory is known as non-voltile memory?

Ans. Secondary memory is known as non-volatile memory.
b. Arrange in ascending order the following units of memory:
TB GB BB MB
Ans. KB MB GB TB

c. How does the touchscreen differ from a graphics tablet? Which do you think is
the most useful mechanism? Why?
Ans. A graphics tablet allows the computer user to draw images by hand
with a special pen called a stylus. The image is visible on the monitor as
one draws but does not appear on the tablet. A touch screen is a computer
display screen that recognizes touch input. The user interacts with the
computer by touching words or pictures on the screen. I think the
touchscreen is a very useful mechanism, as it makes user interaction very
easy; a graphics tablet is limited to professional use.

d. If a shopkeeper needs to print out numerous receipts for his shop, what kind of
printer could he/she use? Do you think it is always important to print out receipts?
Does this raise an environmental issue?
Ans. A shopkeeper will use a dot matrix printer to print out receipts, as it
provides an efficient way of printing multiple carbon copies in low quality.
Very high-quality printing is not required for receipts and hence this is cost
effective. Nowadays, stores do ask if the person requires a receipt.
Receipts lead to so much wastage of paper and are not
environment-friendly. Its better to send receipts through the computer or
mobile phones to prevent paper wastage.

e. Does the computer lose all the data when it is switched off? Explain your
answer.
Ans. The computer does not lose all data when it is switched off. It has
non-volatile memory, which saves the data when you turn the power off and
volatile memory which does not save the data when you turn the power off.

f. Which storage device would you prefer to use to save your homework files?
Why do you think this?
Ans. I may prefer to store their homework files on a flash drive, which is
easy to use and a handy way to transfer data. It comes in various storage
capacities and this also makes it easy because the files to save may be of
different sizes.
