Stress Mitigation via Physical Activity

The thesis titled 'Stress Mitigation Through Physical Activities Among College Students in Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges' investigates the impact of physical activities on stress levels among BPED students. The study found that students experience high levels of stress, particularly from academic and financial pressures, but those engaging in regular physical activities reported lower stress levels and improved well-being. Recommendations include developing comprehensive physical activity programs and enhancing access to sports facilities to support student health and academic performance.

Stress is a prevalent challenge among college students, particularly those in demanding

academic programs like the Bachelor of Physical Education (BPED). Academic
responsibilities, social expectations, financial constraints, and environmental pressures
significantly impact students’ mental and emotional well-being. This study aimed to evaluate
the role of physical activities in mitigating stress among BPED students at Camarines Sur
Polytechnic Colleges. Specifically, it examined the perceived levels of stress across
academic, social, family, financial, and environmental domains and assessed the
effectiveness of physical activities categorized into light, moderate, and vigorous intensities
in reducing stress. A descriptive research design was utilized, involving a survey
questionnaire as the primary data-gathering tool. Stratified sampling was used to select 147
BPED students (75 females and 72 males) from first, second, and third-year levels.
Statistical tools, including weighted mean and percentage analysis, were employed to
interpret the data. The findings revealed that BPED students experience "very stressful"
levels of stress, with academic, financial, and environmental stressors being the most
significant. Students who regularly engaged in physical activities reported reduced stress
levels, improved mood, enhanced focus, and heightened self-confidence. Vigorous and
moderate-intensity activities, such as jogging, weight training, and dancing, were found to be
particularly effective in alleviating stress, while light-intensity activities helped maintain
mobility and reduce sedentary behavior. It is recommended that institutions develop
comprehensive physical activity programs, improve access to sports facilities, and provide
targeted stress management interventions to promote student health and academic
performance.

The study recommended the development of comprehensive physical activity programs within the institution. It also suggested improving access to sports facilities and providing targeted stress management interventions. These measures aim to promote student health and academic performance by effectively managing stress levels through physical activities .

The study utilized both theoretical and conceptual frameworks to evaluate stress mitigation among students. These frameworks provided a structured approach to understanding how various stressors affect student health and the role of physical activities in mitigating these stresses. They contributed to the analysis by offering a basis for evaluating the relationships between stressors and physical activities, guiding the methodical investigation of stress mitigation .

Light-intensity physical activities were found to help maintain mobility and reduce sedentary behavior. While they were less effective than moderate and vigorous activities in directly alleviating high stress levels, they contributed to the overall physical and mental well-being of the students .

The study included 147 BPED students comprising 75 females and 72 males. Researchers ensured balanced representation through stratified sampling, which was used to select participants from different year levels. This approach helped provide a comprehensive understanding of stress across gender lines .

The study employed a descriptive research design using a survey questionnaire as the primary data-gathering tool. Stratified sampling was utilized to select 147 BPED students from first, second, and third-year levels. Statistical tools like weighted mean and percentage analysis were employed to interpret data. These methods ensured a comprehensive evaluation of stress mitigation through physical activities and supported the reliability of the findings by ensuring representative sampling and robust statistical analysis .

The primary stressors identified among Bachelor of Physical Education students at Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges were academic, financial, and environmental pressures. These factors contributed to the students experiencing 'very stressful' levels of stress. The study highlighted that these stressors significantly impacted the mental and emotional well-being of the students .

The statistician, Rowel S. Ramos, played a crucial role in ensuring the reliability and validity of the findings. He was responsible for the statistical treatment of the data gathered, collected, presented, and analyzed in connection with the thesis. This was significant as it assured that the data interpretation was accurate, which lent credibility to the research outcomes .

The study concluded that BPED students experience significant stress levels, primarily due to academic, financial, and environmental factors. Engaging in physical activities, especially those of moderate and vigorous intensity, was concluded to be an effective coping mechanism. These activities helped reduce stress levels, improve mood, enhance focus, and increase self-confidence, thereby promoting better mental health and academic performance .

Moderate and vigorous physical activities, such as jogging, weight training, and dancing, were found to be particularly effective in mitigating stress. Students engaging in these activities reported reduced stress levels, improved mood, enhanced focus, and heightened self-confidence. Vigorous activities were specifically noted for their effectiveness in alleviating stress compared to light-intensity activities which helped maintain mobility and reduced sedentary behavior .

Data was gathered using a survey questionnaire administered to 147 BPED students. The collected data was analyzed using statistical tools such as weighted mean and percentage analysis, which facilitated the interpretation of the respondents' perceived stress levels and the effectiveness of different physical activities in stress mitigation .
