STORYTELLING – OLE HIGUE
(The grandmother sitting in the living room knitting)
Grandmother: (looks out the window) where this lil bhaii deh, y’all see, is pass 3 o’clock
and he can’t meet home yet. I tell he bout all them extra activities he’s
want do after school you know.
(Grandson walks in)
Grandson: Good afternoon granny
Grandmother: Good afternoon. Why you take so long to come home from school? I aint
tell you bout all the extra extra activities you does want take part in?
Grandson: Granny I aint went nowhere, I stay back in school lil because them
children was taking scary stories.
Grandmother: Wuh kinda scary story mek you tek so long fah come home?
Grandson: They was talking bout jumbie and bachoo but I know bout them things
duh so it aint really scare me. The only one that scare me the was this
fancy name thing, um ole-ole ole something.
Grandmother: Ole higue?
Grandson: Yes duh, you know they telling me the thing real? But me aint believe
duh.
Grandmother: Une believe? Its true though
Grandson: Granny you joking right? How you know is true?
Grandmother: Because a ole higue suck me before
Grandson: WHAT! How you know was a ole higue? It coulda been an animal or
something
Grandmother: *laughs* an animal? No animal don’t suck like a ole higue. Plus I saw it.
Grandson: Wait you see one? Wuh it look like?
Grandmother: Well not all ole higes look alike because they are shape shifters but the
one I saw was old and wrinkled.
Grandson: How did you see it? Did it tell you anything? Were you scared?
Grandmother: One question at a time man, but I saw it when it come fah suck me, it
didn’t tell me anything and yes I was very scared.
Grandson: So what did you do when you saw it?
Grandmother: Child what is it with all these questions?
Grandson: I’m curious, you cant tell me you see an ole higue and aint expect me to
ask questions
Grandmother: *laughs* you right. So you want to hear the story?
Grandson: Yes please
Grandmother: Well put down your bag and take a seat
(turns to the audience)
Grandmother: I talking to yall too, suh listen closely
Grandson: Okay granny
(grandson put down his bag and sits on the ground)
Grandmother: Well when I was a young girl
*flashback*
Young girl: (walks into her bedroom and sits on the bed ,while talking on the
phone)
Gyul, today drained me. see duh one they call Maranda, she and duh dutty
foot friend group that did cheating in the test, but is a good thing they get
catch, *yarns*, look we gon catch up later I tired, mhm mhm, bye bye.
(takes off robe)
Is why me skin tingly? Wuhs all these mark on my skin? They just keep
popping up more and more like rabbits when I sleep, but it look like
something suck me. I should ask daddy if he know is wuh. *shouts*
DADDY!
Father: Why you making so much noise? Une see how this place late? I trying fah
sleep.
Young girl: Sorry daddy I did just want show you this thing. (get up from bed and
shows him the marks on her skin)
Father: Wuh happen to you skin girl?
Young girl: I don’t know, I’ve been waking up to these marks on my skin fah couple
days now, I feel like something been sucking me.
Father: Oh gosh, ole higue suck you.
Young girl: Ole higue? I thought duh was a myth or something
Father: No girl, go and bring the rice and the pointer broom.
(daughter leaves and brings the rice and broom)
*Daughter enter room back with rice and broom*
Father: Come lewwe spread the rice around your bed and keep the broom in front
your door.
Young girl: why we doing duh daddy?
Father: (pauses and looks at her)
Don’t question me gyul.
Young girl: Daddy you sure this gone work?
Father: Yes girl now come hurry and spread this thing fast.
(father and daughter spread the rice and father leaves)
Young girl: I hope this rice thing work because these marks making my skin look bad.
(young girl goes to bed and sleep)

Grandson: So granny wuhs the point of the rice?
Grandmother: Well ole higue cant pass rice.
Grandson: Wuh you mean they cant pass rice? Rice is like the weakness?
Grandmother: They does gah stop wuh they doing and count each and if they mess up the
have to start over again.
Grandson: For real? How come though?
Grandmother: Honestly I don’t know.

Grandmother: Are you going to keep asking me questions or do you want me to continue
the story?

(young girl sleeping and ole higue enters room)
Ole higue: Yes, my favorite snack. Wait wuhs duh next to she bed? Is rice.
(starts to count rice grains)
Ole higue: (drop rice) oh fadda , I don’t know why she would do me this. Now I
gotta start over again.
(starts counting rice again)
Young girl: (wakes up) *screams*
Ole higue: *jumps and spills rice* Shut up gyul look wuh u mek
Stww now I gotta count all this again.
Young girl: DADDY DADDY COME QUICK
Father: *rushes in* oh shux! *picks up broom and start hitting ole higue with
it* you feel you could come in hay and suck me daughter? I get something
fah you
(father continues to beat ole higue and ole leaves)
Father: (turns to daughter) you ok, nothing didn’t happen to you right?
Young Girl: Yeah, I good, I just friken you knoe, duh was scary
Father: Une geh nothing fah friken, after duh lix I just give she, she na gone come
back hay if she know wuh good fah she

Grandson: Granny duh really happen to you? Une lying to me?
Granny: Stww……. ine lie fah sum stupid like duh?
Grandson: If duhs true, wuh else you know that real?
Granny: they get couple more story Ine tell you another time but for know une gah
