The StudentShield project aims to develop a tailored non-life insurance product specifically designed for

university students in Tanzania. Recognizing the unique needs and financial constraints of this

covered by existing schemes.

University students in Tanzania often face significant financial and personal risks that can disrupt their
education. These risks include loss or damage to personal property, health emergencies, and liability
issues. Despite these vulnerabilities, traditional insurance products are generally ill-suited to meet their
specific needs due to high costs and complex terms. StudentShield addresses this gap by offering a
customized non-life insurance solution that aligns with the lifestyles and budgets of Tanzanian students.

The development of StudentShield involves a multi-phase approach, Market Research, Conducting


extensive surveys and focus groups with university students across Tanzania to understand their specific
risks, insurance needs, and financial capabilities, Product Design, Using insights from the market
research to design insurance packages that include coverage for personal belongings (laptops, mobile
phones, bicycles), health emergencies, and liability issues at affordable premiums, Partnerships,
Collaborating with universities, student associations, and insurance companies to create a seamless
enrollment process and integrated support system, Pilot Testing, Implementing a pilot program in select
universities to evaluate the effectiveness and acceptance of the insurance product, followed by iterative
improvements based on feedback, and Launch and Scaling, Rolling out the refined insurance product
across all major universities in Tanzania, supported by targeted marketing and continuous monitoring.

Expected Outcomes, The StudentShield project is anticipated to enhance the financial security and well-
being of university students in Tanzania. By providing a reliable safety net, it aims to reduce the impact
of unforeseen events on students' academic progress and overall quality of life. Additionally, the project
seeks to foster a culture of insurance among young adults, contributing to broader financial inclusion
and stability in Tanzania.

StudentShield represents a pioneering initiative to address the insurance needs of Tanzanian university
students. Through tailored coverage, affordable premiums, and strategic partnerships, the project
aspires to offer a practical and sustainable insurance solution that can be scaled and adapted to similar
contexts in other developing regions.
