1. Introduction
The Muslim world faces a profound intellectual crisis. Modern disciplines are based on
secular and materialist worldviews that ignore divine guidance. They often conflict with
the Islamic understanding of knowledge as a sacred trust. The movement of Islamization
of knowledge is a response to this challenge. It seeks to purify and restructure all fields of
knowledge in line with the values and worldview of Islam. This assignment explores the
need, method, and application of Islamization across various disciplines.
2. What is Islamization of Knowledge?
“The Islamization of knowledge has been defined as a process by which modern
knowledge is integrated into the Islamic worldview or brought into harmony with the
basic worldview of Islam.”¹
It is not about rejecting Western contributions or adding Islamic terms to textbooks.
Instead, it involves a critical evaluation of assumptions, theories, and goals of modern
disciplines and reconstructing them on Qur’anic and Prophetic foundations.
3. The Crisis of Modern Knowledge
Modern secular knowledge:
- Excludes the Creator from its worldview
- Is based on materialism and moral relativism
- Causes identity crises among Muslim youth
- Separates faith from learning
Islamization addresses this by reconnecting knowledge to tawheed, akhlaq, and human
purpose. It emphasizes that true knowledge must lead to justice, moral growth, and
submission to Allah.
4. Methodology and Principles of Islamization
Key principles include:
- Tawheed (Oneness of God): All knowledge must reflect Allah’s unity and purpose.
- Khilafah (Human Responsibility): Knowledge must benefit creation and serve ethical
goals.
- Adl (Justice): Disciplines should promote social equity and fairness.
- Integration: Islam does not divide between 'religious' and 'worldly' knowledge.
Islamization begins with a Tawhidi worldview, proceeds through ijtihad, and builds new
knowledge rooted in wahy (revelation) and reason (‘aql).
5. Reconstructing Islamic Epistemology
Epistemology in Islam emphasizes that truth comes from both divine revelation and
rational thought, working in harmony. This differs from Western systems which often
separate knowledge from ethics and metaphysics. Islam views knowledge as a form of
‘ibadah (worship) and a means to achieve tazkiyah (purification).
6. Islamization of Psychology
Western psychology is largely atheistic, focusing on behavior and cognition while
ignoring the soul (nafs). Islamic psychology includes:
- Nafs (self), ruh (spirit), and qalb (heart)
- Treating diseases of the heart: arrogance, envy, despair
- Building balance between worldly duties and spiritual development
- Prophet Muhammad ﷺas the perfect psychological model
Islamic psychology uses Qur’an and Sunnah as tools for healing and human
development.
7. Islamization of Economics
“Islamizing economics entails the transformation of economic theory, practice, and
institutions in accordance with the ethical and legal norms of Islam.”²
Western economics promotes:
- Riba (interest)
- Materialism
- Wealth concentration
Islamic economics promotes:
- Zakat, waqf, halal income
- Fair distribution
- Brotherhood, trust, and taqwa
The economy becomes a tool for social justice, not individual profit.
8. Islamization of Linguistics
“Language is the vehicle of thought... If Muslim thinking is to be Islamized, the medium
of thought—language—should also be Islamized.”
Islamized linguistics should come from the Qur’an and Sunnah.
Arabic is the main source because it is the language of Revelation.
The goal is not to use Arabic terms in secular theories, but to build new Islamic
theories of language and meaning.
🔹 Qur’anic View of Language
The Qur’an uses language to guide, awaken, and reform people.
Language is not just for speaking, but a spiritual tool.
🔹 Principles of Islamic Linguistics
1. Language is a divine gift (ni’mah).
2. It must serve truth (haqq) and justice (‘adl).
3. Communication should build understanding, mercy, and moral growth.
🔹 Arabic Verses and Meaning
1. Surah Al-Baqarah (2:31)
{}َوَعَّلَم آَدَم اَأْلْسَماَء ُكَّلَها
“And He taught Adam the names – all of them.”
2. Surah Ar-Rahman (55:1–4)
{ ) َعَّلَمُه ٱْلَبَياَن3( ) َخ َلَق ٱِإْلنَس ٰـَن2( ) َعَّلَم ٱْلُقْر َءاَن1( }الَّر ْح َمٰـُن
“The Most Merciful. Taught the Qur'an. Created man. Taught him eloquence.”
3. Surah Ar-Rum (30:22)
{ َواْخِتاَل ُف َأْلِس َنِتُكْم َوَأْلَواِنُكْم...}َوِمْن آَياِتِه
“And among His signs is the variation in your languages and colors.”
🔹 Purpose of Language in Islam
To express Haqq (Truth)
To reflect Tawhid (Oneness of Allah)
To call to Allah and establish justice
🔹 Criticism of Western Linguistics
Western views treat language as man-made and evolving without purpose.
It removes the sacred meaning from language.
9. Islamization of Arts and Architecture
Islamic art is:
Based on beauty (ihsan), balance, and tawheed
Avoids nudity, idolatry, and ego
Uses calligraphy, geometry, and nature to glorify Allah
Islamic architecture builds spaces for worship, modesty, and community.
10. Islam and Urban Development
Western cities prioritize profit and individualism. Islam teaches:
Cities must serve deen and akhlaq
Include mosques, gardens, family spaces
Ensure privacy, cleanliness, and worship
Urban planning should reflect Islamic ethics
11. Islamization of Science and Technology
Science in Islam is not secular. It is a means of understanding Allah’s signs in nature.
Qur’an encourages observation, reflection, and discovery — not atheism.
Technology must:
Serve humanity, not greed or war
Promote halal living
Respect the environment and ethical use
12. Reforming Education and Curriculum
Islamized education should:
Teach Qur’an and Sunnah as the core foundation
Integrate Islamic values into all subjects
Develop moral, intellectual, and spiritual character
Train scholars who serve the Ummah
13. Islamization and Media
Modern media promotes:
Vulgarity
Lies and manipulation
Loss of moral values
Islamic media should:
Spread truth, ethics, and good character
Promote learning, da’wah, and reform
Defend the image of Islam and the Prophet ﷺ
14. Global Strategy for Islamization
From the book’s final chapters, a comprehensive global strategy includes:
Reforming syllabi in schools and universities
Establishing Islamic research institutes
Training teachers and scholars with Islamic worldview
Publishing authentic Islamic content
Building networks between Muslim countries
This is not a short-term project — it is a revival movement.
15. Conclusion
Islamization of knowledge is not optional. It is necessary for the survival and success
of the Ummah. Without it, Muslims remain intellectually colonized. Through
Islamization, knowledge becomes a path to Allah, not away from Him. It brings balance,
justice, and guidance back into education, research, and society.
