PART A: STATISTICS

QUESTION 1

The growth of two variety of plants is shown in Table 1.

Table 1: Growth of plants (in centimeters)

Variety 1 Variety 2
12 20 23 32 35 29 32 36 41 42
38 38 40 41 43 47 50 54 54 58
43 43 47 52 53 59 62 65 69 75
53 55 58 59 77 80

Based on Table 1,
a) Present a stem and leaf plot for the growth of plants in Variety 1.
b) Find the distribution of data using measure of central tendency, given that the median
growth of plants after 60 days for Variety 1 and 2 is 43 and 54, respectively.
c) Identify which data set is more consistent.
d) Interpret the 95% confidence interval for the difference of population mean growth
of plants. Assume the population variances are the same for both varieties.
e) Assess the difference of population mean growth of plants for both varieties using
confidence interval method in (d).

QUESTION 2

A study was done on the growth rate of catfishes in a pond. The data in Table 2 below shows
the mass of catfish after three months, and the mean growth rate is 41.17.

Table 2 : Growth rate of catfish

28 65 66 43 57 25 33 57 23 22
45 20 25 20 35 22 40 70 28 61
25 55 46 50 38 30 20 30 59 75

Based on the data in Table 2,

(a) organise the data in the given frequency distribution table.

Class 20 - 29
Midpoint (x)
Frequency (f)

(b) find the distribution of data using the measure of central tendency.
(c) verify the shape of distribution using a histogram.
(d) find its coefficient of variation.
QUESTION 3

A researcher believes that the population mean age of medical doctors in a large hospital
system is more than 46 years old with the population standard deviation is 4.2 years. A
random sample of 30 doctors from the system is selected, and the mean age of the sample is
48.6. Analyse whether we can accept the researchers believe or not at a 5% significance level.

QUESTION 4

A manager wishes to determine whether the mean times required to complete a certain
task differ for the three competency levels of employee, namely beginner, intermediate
and advance. He randomly selected 9 employees from each level of competency. The
incomplete analysis of variance results is shown below.

Table 3: Analysis of Variance

Source of Variation SS df MS F Fcv
Treatment 3.4028
Error 522.46
Total 702.53

(a) Find the number of replications.

(b) Find all the values in Table 3.
(c) Perform hypothesis testing on the mean times required to complete a
certain task for the three competency levels of employee at 5% significance
level.

QUESTION 5
Figure 1 below shows the analysis of linear regression using SPSS on the interest rates for car
loans and the average number of customers who apply for the loans in a month from a finance
company.
Figure 1: Linear Regression

Based on Figure 1,
(a) Classify the variables involved in this study into dependent and independent
variables.
(b) Interpret the coefficient of correlation and coefficient of determination.
(c) Determine the number of applicants if the interest rate is 4.0%.
(d) Describe the relationship between the interest rate and the number of applicants
at a 0.05 significance level.

QUESTION 6
A study reports an analysis of satisfaction level of customers of a new product. At the time of
study, 62% are said highly satisfied, 20% are satisfied, 8% are dissatisfied and 10% are highly
dissatisfied on 550 customers. The result shows that 320 are highly satisfied, 80 are satisfied,
50 are dissatisfied and 100 are highly dissatisfied. Elaborate on whether the distribution is the
same as stated at a 0.05 significance level.

Table 4: Satisfaction level of customers

Level Highly Satisfied Satisfied Dissatisfied Highly Dissatisfied
Number of Customers 320 80 50 100
(Observed)
QUESTION 7

A hostel in a private college comprises 50% Batch A students, 30% Batch B students, and 20%
Batch C students. 2%, 4% and 5% of Batch A, B and C students respectively does not have their
own transport.

(a) Illustrate the given information using Tree Diagram, including the associated
probabilities, and the intersection together with the respective outcomes.
(b) Compute the probability that a Batch A student have their own transport.
(c) Given that a student that is without transport, compute the probability that he or
she is a Batch B student.

QUESTION 8

Pak Mat Western Sdn. Bhd. has collected data on its annual sales and its annual advertising
expenses. The results are recorded in Table 5 below:

Table 5: Annual sales and advertising expenses of Pak Mat Western Sdn. Bhd.
Advertising expenses, x (RM’000) 2 4 7 8 10 13 14
Sales, y (RM million) 8 12 17 20 22 28 32

(b) Predict the expected sales if the company spend RM 50,000 on advertising.
(c) Write the interpretation for the coefficient of correlation.
