As stated by Bulne J.K., Percieved Impact of social media on Filipino Undergraduates
English Language Learning (2022, April) The overwhelming dominance of social media has led
many researchers to study its impacts on various aspects of life. Aware of this, the researcher
specifically investigated the impact of social media on Filipino undergraduates' English language
learning. To do this, the researcher utilized a quantitative approach to analyze the data from 114
undergraduates of Western Mindanao State University. Findings revealed that the most
frequently used social media platform is Facebook. Students reported to have used social media
more than an hour daily, primarily to communicate with friends. There were both positive and
negative impacts of social media on undergraduates' English language learning which calls for
careful utilization in the part of social media users.
According to Martizano, M. , Impacts of Social Media on English language Teaching and
learnings. A Systematic Review of Literature (2023 January) Social media use is evident in the
facilitating of teaching and learning especially in the English language teaching arena. This is
why it is important to know what social media are useful in the teaching and learning of the
English language and how these social media affect both the teachers and the learners'
performance in the educational setting. This study is conducted exploring various articles on the
impacts of social media in the English language teaching and learning. The surveyed articles
underwent thematic analysis investigating the problems or objectives, methodologies and
designs, salient findings, conclusions and recommendations of the selected articles. This
systematic review of related literature has identified the positive and negative impacts of social
media on the English language teaching and learning. From the obtained result of the review, the
researcher proposed important areas or topics to be considered for future studies to further
enhance and widen the knowledge about the relevance of social media in the English language
education.
Additionally, Delos Santos, K., & Ilustre, R. Social Media Platforms as Pedagogical
Tools in Language Acquisition (2022 April 8)Social media has livened the digital world with its
numerous modern features in communication, media sharing, and entertainment elements. As a
part of the continuous search for effective and efficient ways of instruction, this review aimed to
describe social media as a pedagogical tool in language acquisition. The methodology used was
patterned to Arksey and O'Malley's (2005) approach to reviewing the literature. Fifteen (15)
research articles published in online journals were reviewed to describe the effectiveness of
social media when utilized as a pedagogical tool in language acquisition. Results of the review
showed that social media is primarily used for communication, collaborative learning, and
extension of learning practice. Writing skills and vocabulary are the primary skills developed in
using social media platforms such as Facebook which is the most frequently used app for
language learning. Participants of the studies show a positive attitude toward the integration of
social media into language acquisition. In a conclusion, various social media apps and sites
exhibit promising influence on language learning not only in formal education but as well as the
extension of instruction outside schools.

In similar way Zhou, Y. Impacts of social media on language learning: A review of
literature (2021). This paper reviews social media impacts on language learning, emphasising
social media as language skill development tools and social media as intercultural
communication [Link] result indicates social media merit multiple benefits and functions
in the language learning processes, such as adequate authentic input resources, less stressful
practice spaces, plenty of intercultural communication opportunities, and enhanced learner
collaboration. The study also highlights potential limitations of social media platforms, for
example, distraction and conflicting information concerns. At last, several future directions have
been proposed for upcoming empirical research.
In (2021, September 12). Nurjannah, L. Et al. Studied about A review of literature on
using social media to learn English in relaxed and convenient manner. We often hear the media
as a means of comenascation, or more commonly referred to "social media. However, the media
also be used as learning tool. In this case, the media is needed in learning to increase the spirit of
learning in students. Because in this day and age, many people are dependent on and like social
media. So we also wrote this paper with the aim of knowing the extent to which social media can
improve students "learning of English. We analyze articles related to this topic to develop social
media ideas to improve students English learning.
According to study conducted by Slim, H. and Hafedh., M., Social Media Impact on
Language Learning for Specific Purposes:A study in English for Business
[Link], social media are dominating the life of people. Facebook has become
noticeably widespread among the youth, and students in particular. Research has indicated that
Facebook could be an effective platform for language learning. This study, therefore, comes to
explore the effects of Facebook-assisted teaching on learning English for specific purposes by
students at the University of Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. A sample of 64 students from the Faculty of
Business Administration, taking a Business Letters course in English, were divided into a
Facebook-tutored group and a traditional classroom tutored group and were given the same
vocabulary content. However, no significant difference between the two groups was found in
terms of achievement in spite of the positive response and the high satisfaction level the
Facebook-tutored students showed towards the use of such a platorm.

As stated in the study conducted by Moquero, W. Garson, J. The influence of social
media and mobile applications on students mastery of English grammar.( 2024, January). This
study investigates the influence of social media and mobile application usage on the mastery of
grammar among Grade 10 students, with a sample size of 123 [Link] findings reveal
that social media and mobile applications significantly influence grammar mastery. Social media
usage positively affects grammar mastery, while mobile application usage has a negative effect.
The data further indicates that students engage moderately with mobile applications, exploring
app features more frequently than using them for grammar practice. The study also highlights
that the frequency of mobile app use varies, suggesting that students may not use these
applications consistently for grammar learning.

The power of social media language:How it shapes the current generation, Social media
Social media has become an integral part of our daily lives, and we can see its impact
everywhere, from the way we interact with each other to the products we buy. Social media has
also significantly influenced the way we communicate, and as a result, our language has been
shaped by it. Younger generations have adopted new slang, abbreviations, and even emojis to
express themselves. Herlina L. et al. The influence of social media on language evolution A:
Linguistic Analysis of emerging internet Slang( 2024, December 6,) This study investigate the
influence of social media on language evolution, focusing specifically on the emergence and
spread of internet slang. Using a qualitative, literature review- based approach, this research
analyzes existing studies and linguistics theories to explore how platform like Twitter, Tiktok,
and Instagram contribute to the creation, dissemination and standardization of new forms of
expression. The findings indicate that social media not only fosters the rapid development of
slang but also blurs the boundaries between informal and formal language use, as online
expression often cross into mainstream communication. The research concludes that social media
plays a crucial in shaping modern language use contributing to the continual evolution of
language in digital era. This study offers insight into how language changes in the age of social
media, with implications for linguistics, sociolinguistics, and communication studies.

As stated in the study conducted by Dashti, F. & Abdulsalam, H. The influence of social
media application on learning as a second language ( 2025, January 30,),this study aims to
discover how the daily usage of social media platforms affects the users' second language
learning. The study has been conducted in public high schools in Kuwait from different areas. A
questionnaire has been distributed to the high school students to seek their opinions about social
media usage and to test their language skills in English. The questionnaire was distributed on a
random sample of 300 volunteering participants has been obtained through the online survey. An
interview has been also conducted with high school English teachers to get sufficient information
about the social media usage and its effect on their students. Four teachers were asked to provide

skills of the language can be improved by the usage of the social media platforms specially the
listening, speaking, and reading skills. The writing skill, however have not shown any
improvement after using the social media platforms. Therefore, social media applications can be
a reliable tool for learning a second language but it has to be under the guidance and supervision
of professional teachers.

According to study conducted by Malik, A.& Qureshi, F. Exploring the impact of social
media on English language learning: opportunities and Challenges (2024, May 12,) This study
seeks to elaborate on the influence that social media presents in the learning of the English

METHODOLOGY

Research design

The researchers analyze the adverse influences of social media to language usage to determine its
influences in the learners' vocabulary, grammar proficiency, communication skills, exposure to new
language, writing style use of informal language and spelling.

Settings and example

The researchers conducted the study to the second year bachelor of secondary education students
major in English Blocks E & H of San Jose Community [Link] second year college students of
San Jose Community College are constantly exposed to social media thereby the way how they use
the English language is also influenced by social media. Furthermore, second year college students'
age are appropriate to be respondents for this study.

Data gathering process

Data sources

The study utilized primary and secondary sources of data. The primary sources of data came
from the respondents the 2nd year English major students of blocks E & H of San Jose
Community College. Primary data was obtained through the answered questions from the given
survey questionnaires to the learners. The secondary sources of data were obtained through
internet research.

Location of the study

The researchers conducted the study in San Jose Community College, San Jose Malilipot, Albay.

Research Instruments

In order to get the necessary data or information, the researchers used Google Forms to
administer survey surveys. The first part of the surveys asks about their social media usage hours
and platforms. The issue on how social media effectively influences their language development
is addressed in the second section of the questionnaire. As 5 for highly effective, 4 for very
effective, 3 for effective, 2 for fairly effective, and 1 for not effective. The final section of the
survey inquires as to whether respondents utilize social media to learn languages and whether it
significantly enhances their language progress.

Common questions

Powered by AI

The study conducted in Saudi Arabia evaluated the effectiveness of Facebook-assisted teaching by comparing it to traditional classroom methods for students learning English for specific purposes. While Facebook-tutored groups displayed high satisfaction and positive attitudes toward using the platform, there was no significant improvement in achievement compared to the traditional group. This suggests that while Facebook can enhance engagement, its impact on measurable academic performance may be limited .

Studies from Pakistan indicate that cross-cultural backgrounds influence perceptions of social media as an English language learning tool. Participants from diverse backgrounds appreciated the opportunity social media provides for engaging with English content, reporting improvements in vocabulary and grammar. This suggests that cultural diversity may enhance the appreciation and practical utilization of social media in language learning contexts, though cultural-specific challenges could also arise .

Social media influences language evolution by playing a critical role in the rapid emergence and dissemination of internet slang. Platforms like Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram facilitate the spread of new forms of expression, often blurring the lines between informal and formal language use. As a result, slang quickly permeates mainstream communication, shaping modern language use and contributing to the continual evolution of language in the digital era .

Potential limitations of using social media platforms for language learning include the risk of distraction and exposure to conflicting information. These limitations might affect learners by reducing their concentration, introducing misconceptions, and potentially degrading the quality of learning. Overreliance on social media could lead students to consume inaccurate language samples, impacting their language acquisition negatively .

Artificial intelligence (AI) on social media platforms can both aid and hinder language development. AI tools offer guidance and examples for grammatical concepts, potentially enhancing language skills. However, the misuse of such tools—such as reliance on AI-generated content like essays—can impede language mastery by reducing opportunities for linguistic study and engagement. This dual role necessitates careful management to ensure AI-supported activities genuinely contribute to language learning .

Studies suggest that future research on social media in language learning should address its diverse impacts, develop strategies to manage distractions, and harness its benefits more effectively. Researchers should explore how social media can integrate with traditional educational methods and assess long-term effects on language proficiency. Additionally, empirical research should continue examining the nuanced roles of social media in different learning contexts, ensuring its potential is thoroughly understood and effectively utilized .

The integration of social media into language acquisition extends beyond formal education by providing authentic input resources and less stressful practice spaces, as well as myriad opportunities for intercultural communication and enhanced learner collaboration. Studies show social media apps like Facebook offer additional instructional channels outside traditional school environments, which sustain and enhance language learning efforts .

Recent research suggests that while social media is an effective supplementary tool for language learning, it can also pose challenges within formal educational frameworks. These challenges include exposure to slang and informal language that can affect the formal language use expected in educational settings. The casual language style prevalent on social media may conflict with academic standards, necessitating cautious integration into formal education to maximize its benefits .

The study involving high school students in Kuwait revealed that while social media platforms enhanced listening, speaking, and reading skills, they had no noticeable improvement in writing skills. This finding underscores the differential impact of social media on language acquisition, suggesting its efficacy in more interactive and receptive aspects of language learning rather than productive ones .

The research at San Jose Community College found that social media significantly influences language evolution by affecting students' use of vocabulary, grammar, and informal language styles. It suggests that constant exposure to social media alters how students engage with language, impacting their language skills and prompting educators to harness these platforms' benefits while mitigating negative effects through guided use .
