INTRODUCTION
Preface Systems develop tell tale signs of impending breakdown (i.e. p/s ripple, loose con-
nectors or chaffed insulation before shorting). It is the objective of this program to
catch any and all such problems before they cause major malfunctions, downtime
and loss of revenue for the customer which, therefore, would result in improved cus-
tomer satisfaction.
Objectives
1. Meet specifications established by design engineering and manufacturing.
2. Meet Safety Standards.
3. Check image quality and performance.
4. Provide customer with a written checklist of the above.
Meet Specifications The system is designed to meet a set of performance specifications. One objective
of this preventive maintenance program is to verify that product performance is within
those specifications as indicated in the service manual.
Meet Safety Standards The purpose of a safety check is to verify proper functioning of all product safety fea-
tures. A typical check is to measure the amount of leakage current that could pass
through a patient/operator via contact with the equipment enclosure, ECG electrodes
or transducers.
Image Quality Check One objective is to check image quality and compare images with ones taken at a
previous preventive maintenance. With the help of physician and/or sonographer,
decide whether image quality needs adjustment.
NOTE: If image quality adjustments are needed, they should be scheduled sepa-
rately and coded other than preventive maintenance service class.
Reference Manual Refer to the Technical Publications Ordering section of the Ultrasound Field
Part Numbers Handbook for the part numbers relating to documentation.
InSite Test If the site is InSite entitled, call the OnLine Center and perform and InLink connection
test.

Preventive The Government and other organizations overlooking the operations of medical
Maintenance institutions require planned maintenance documentation for medical equipment.
Inspection Most institutions must have the documents to receive accreditation each year. The
Certificate preventive maintenance program checklist will provide the customer one such docu-
ment for their records.
A record of the checklist should be kept in the room with, or close to, the system.
This serves as a reference for customer and the service engineer.
It is important to note that this program is only for preventive maintenance inspection
SC (service codes 97 and 12). Any corrective maintenance that requires parts and/
or more than a few minutes times should be scheduled for a later date and time.
This will then be coded other than preventive maintenance.
The information contained here-in will give the basis for a preventive maintenance
along with the information to accomplish some service adjustments as needed. Any-
one coming up with an improved method of performing any procedure in this manual
is encouraged to submit those ideas to service engineering or your region engineer.

Probe Cleaning Wear approved latex gloves for protection while cleaning, disinfecting or sterilizing
and High Level probes.
Disinfecting
Instructions Latex gloves can be ordered using the following stock numbers:
46–194427P347—Large 46–194427P3478—X–Large
Devices containing latex may cause severe allergic reaction in latex sensitive individ-
CAUTION uals. Refer to FDA’s March 29, 1991 Medical Alert on latex products.
1. After each use, disconnect the probe from the ultrasound console and re-
move all coupling gel from the probe by wiping with a soft cloth and rinsing
with flowing water.
2. Wash the probe with mild soap in lukewarm water. Scrub the probe as need-
ed using a soft sponge, gauze, or cloth to remove all visible residue from the
probe surface. Prolonged soaking or scrubbing with a soft bristle brush (such
as a toothbrush) may be necessary if material has dried onto the probe sur-
face.
3. Rinse the probe with enough clean potable water to remove all visible soap
residue.
4. Air dry or dry with a soft cloth.
Disinfecting Probes Ultrasound probes can be disinfected using liquid chemical germicides. The level of
disinfection is directly related to the duration of contact with the germicide. Increased
contact time produces a higher level of disinfection. 2% Glutaraldehyde-based solu-
tions have been shown to be very effective for this purpose. Cidex is the only germi-
cide that has been evaluated for compatibility with the material used to construct the
probes.
In order for liquid chemical germicides to be effective, all visible residue must be re-
CAUTION moved during the cleaning process. Thoroughly clean the probe, as described earlier
before attempting disinfection.

Disinfecting Probes (cont’d)
CREUTZFIELD–JACOB DISEASE
CAUTION Neurological use on patients with this disease must be avoided. If a probe becomes
contaminated, there is no adequate disinfecting means.
Biological
Hazard
S Do not immerse the probe into any liquid beyond the level specified for that
probe. Never immerse the transducer connector or probe adapters into any liq-
uid.
S Avoid mechanical shock or impact to the transducer and do not apply excessive
bending or pulling force to the cable.
S Transducer damage can result from contact with inappropriate coupling or clean-
ing agents:
S Do not soak or saturate transducers with solutions containing alcohol,
bleach, ammonium chloride compounds or hydrogen peroxide
S Avoid contact with solutions or coupling gels containing mineral oil or
lanolin
S Avoid temperatures above 60° C.
S Inspect the probe prior to use for damage or degeneration to the housing, strain
relief, lens and seal. Do not use a damaged or defective probe.
Coupling Gel Coupling gels should not contain the following ingredients as they are known to
Precautions cause probe damage:

These electrical safety tests are based on and conform to IEC 601–1.1. Only the
check list acceptance values for GEMS–Am differ from this standard. They are in-
tended for the electrical safety evaluation of cord connected, electrically operated,
patient care equipment. If additional information is needed, refer to the IEC 601–1.1
document.
To avoid electrical shock, the unit under test must not be connected to other elecĆ
CAUTION trical equipment. Remove all interconnecting cables and wires. The unit under
test must not be contacted by users or patients while performing these tests.
Possible risk of infection. Do not handle soiled or contaminated probes and other
CAUTION components that have been in patient contact. Follow appropriate cleaning and
The Dale 600 has self–contained lamps designed for testing the outlet wiring ar-
rangement. Plug the Dale 600 into each outlet to be tested comparing the lamp sta-
tus with Illustration 6.
NOTE: No outlet tester can detect the condition where the white neutral wire and the
green grounding wire are reversed. If later tests indicate high leakage currents, this
should be suspected as a possible cause and the outlet wiring should be visually in-
spected.
The patient must not be connected to the equipment during this test.
CAUTION
The Dale 600 measures line cord resistance from the third pin of the attachment plug
to the meter’s Chassis Cable clamp. Test the grounding continuity of the system to
all exposed metal parts in accordance with the IEC 601–1.1 procedure as above.
See Illustration 8. Refer to the Dale 600 Instruction Manual for meter self tests and
operation. Record measured resistance of the grounding continuity on the appropri-
ate form. The ground wire resistance should be less than 0.2 ohms.
Console power should be off for at least ten (10) seconds before switching
CAUTION polarity. The sudden change could destroy the power supplies.
When measuring system chassis currents with the Dale 600, always use the CHASSIS
selection of the function switch. This requires the ground clip lead and changing the
meters switches in accordance with the IEC 601–1.1. Refer to the Dale 600 Instruction
Manual for meter self–test and operation. Record the highest leakage current measured
on the appropriate form. See Illustration 8.
When using the Microguard or a similar test instrument, its power plug may be in-
serted into the wall outlet and the equipment under test is plugged into the receptacle
on the panel of the meter. This places the meter in the grounding conductor and the
current flowing from the case to ground will be indicated in any of the current ranges.
Reference the procedure in the IEC 601–1.1. The maximum allowable limit for
chassis source leakage is 300µa.
Console power should be off for at least ten (10) seconds before switching
CAUTION polarity. The sudden change could destroy the power supplies.
Record the leakage measured on the appropriate form. The maximum allowable
isolated patient lead isolation leakage is 10µa.
The Dale 600 provides five snap type ECG buttons for testing patient leads. Snap
on all patient leads tot he meter and assure that the ground clip is connected to the
system’s ground terminal. See Illustration 12. Select the meter’s LEAD–GND func-
tion. Select and test each ECG lead positions (except ALL) of the LEAD selector,
testing each to the power condition combinations found in . Record the highest leak-
age current measured on the appropriate form.
When using the Dale 600, switch the meter’s function selector to the LEAD–LEAD
position. See Illustration 11. Select and test each of the five ECG lead positions (ex-
cept ALL) on the LEAD selector, testing each to the power condition combinations
found in Table 2. Record the highest leakage current measured onto the appropriate
form.

When using the Dale 600, switch the meter’s function selector to the LEAD–ISO.
Select the ALL position on the lead selector. Depress the rocker switch to ISO TEST
to test lead isolation.
Line voltage is applied to the ECG leads during this test. To avoid possible electric
CAUTION shock hazard, the system being tested must not be touched by patients, users or
NOTE: It is not necessary to test each lead individually or power condition combina-
tions as required in previous tests.
The probe’s imaging area is immersed in a saline solution along with a grounding
probe from the meter to complete the current path. Saline solution is a mixture of
water and salt. The salt adds a free ion to the water, making it conductive. Normal
saline solution is 0.9% salt or 1/2 gram salt per 1 liter of water. If saline is not avail-
able, a mixture of one quart water with one or more grams of table salt, mixed thor-
oughly, will substitute. To test a probe, set the meter’s function selector to EXTER-
NAL. Connect the probe for test with the meter’s appropriate adapter. Plug the
saline probe into the meter’s connector marked CHASSIS and the probe adapter into
the connector marked EXTERNAL. Add the meter’s saline probe and the imaging
area of the probe into the saline bath. Depress the ISO TEST rocker switch and re-
cord the leakage current measured on the appropriate form.
NOTE: Each probe will have so me amount of leakage, dependent on its design.
Small variations in probe leakage currents are normal from probe to probe. Other
variations will result from differences in line voltage and test lead placement.
