Agatha Christies use of narrative techniques create and maintain

suspenseful mood in ATTWN by using setting and foreshadowing.


To begin Christie's use of narrative techniques such as setting creates
suspense. In act one Ten strangers were invited to Indian island to stay
as guest Rodgers on page 37 says “there is no telephone…no boat on
the island”. This means that they will feel stressed because they are
trapped with no escape, and they can make things worse if they are
trapped with strangers. I e windows act two, people are dead and;
there is a storm; the room is much darker… the windows are closed.”
This means that the thunder and the waves are crashing, and
everybody is already jumpy. In act three on page 57 Narrator say “…the
room is lit by three candles…sit in silence” and on page 59 Vera said,
“blew out the candles…dark…thought I was being strangled”. In other
words, everyone is scared for their life and is jumpy. The place is dark,
so they do not know what is in front of them. Christies use of Setting
impacts the story by making it a lot mor suspenseful because they are
trapped.
In addition, Christie uses the foreshadowing narrative technique to
create suspense. She uses rhymes to lead the story. In act 1, everyone
was sitting around and talking and then they found the rhyme and the
mantelpiece. When Marston died Emily Brent said” look here is one of
the little Indians of the mantelpiece...broken (39). This means that the
guests were surprised and puzzled they thought it was suicide, but this
foreshadows that they will later figure out is [Link] act 2 when
general McKenzie died, they figured out it was a murderer, but it was
not until Rodgers went to get sticks and blare said” sticks? Sticks? Oh
my gosh sticks!” They figured out it was connected to the rhyme. In
other words, everyone suspected each other, kept thinking about
rhyme and made sure they stuck together. in act 3 there was only 5
guests left and blare pointed to the rhyme when Lombard said he could
shoot them, and blare just started arguing with him saying it was not
his goal. This means that the murderer is trying to make it more
suspicious by keeping his murders connected to the rhyme.
In conclusion, Christie has been making more suspense by
foreshadowing and setting. Act by act death by death the suspense is
growing this play keeps you on the edge of your seat.
