Airport Drainage System Design Guide

The document provides examples of calculating drainage systems and runoff coefficients for various land uses and topographies, including an airport drainage design and watershed characteristics. It includes formulas for rainfall intensity, discharge calculations, and weighted runoff coefficients based on land use. Additionally, it discusses a hypothetical drainage basin scenario for determining storm sewer capacity.

Example 1 : An engineer is required to design a

drainage system for an airport with an area of 2.5

km2. The rainfall intensity in that region is given
by: 35
I 
t  10
0.38

Where I is intensity in cm/h and t is duration(time of

concentration) in minutes.
If the concentration time for the area is estimated as 50
minutes,
what is discharge that must be used to design the system?
Solution:
• Concentration time tc = 50 min
• Intensity of rainfall for this duration =

• Since the airport is fully paved, it may be

considered impervious and the runoff
coefficient C may be taken as unity.
• Therefore
Q  2.778 CAI  2.778  1  2.5  7.384  51.25 m 3 / s

Example, Compute the runoff from 5 inches of rainfall
on a 1000-acre watershed.
• The hydrologic soil group is 50 % Group B and 50 %
Group C spread throughout the watershed.
• Antecedent moisture condition II is assumed.
• The land use is:
• 40 % residential area that is 30 % impervious
• 12 % residential area that is 65 % impervious
• 18 % paved roads with curb sand storm sewers
• 16 % open land with 50 % fair grass cover and 50 % good
grass cover
• 14 % parking lots, plazas ,schools, and so on (all im
pervious)
• Home-take excercise: A hypothetical drainage
basin comprising seven sub catchments is shown
in Fig. below Determine the required capacity of
the storm sewer EB draining subarea III for a
five-year return period storm. This sub
catchment has an area of 4 acres, a runoff
coefficient of 0.6, and an inlet time of 10
minutes.
