Alkali metals are softer and exhibit lower melting and boiling points compared to alkaline earth metals. This difference arises because alkali metals have only one electron per atom contributing to metallic bonding, leading to weaker bonds. In contrast, alkaline earth metals have two valence electrons contributing to stronger metallic bonds, resulting in higher hardness and elevated melting points. Additionally, the increased nuclear charge in alkaline earth metals contributes to more robust metal-to-metal interactions .
The reaction of alkali metals with water is highly exothermic, meaning it releases a significant amount of heat. This exothermic reaction causes metals like sodium and potassium to melt into silvery balls as they generate heat upon contact with water, a manifestation of their low melting points. The liberation of hydrogen gas results in audible hissing, and sometimes, the hydrogen may ignite, causing the metal to exhibit flame colors peculiar to the metal reacting; for instance, potassium yields a lilac flame .
Alkaline earth metals form ions by losing their two valence electrons, resulting in a decrease in energy levels and a reduction in ionic radius compared to their atomic form. For example, calcium changes from an atomic configuration of 2.8.8.2 to an ionic configuration of 2.8.8, making the ion smaller than the atom. This electron loss confers increased stability to the ion but reduces its metallic bonding, affecting properties like solubility and reactivity .
Chemical families are groups of elements sharing the same number of valence electrons and demonstrating uniform gradation in physical and chemical properties. For alkali metals, these characteristics manifest in elements with one valence electron, such as lithium, sodium, and potassium, placing them in Group I of the periodic table. They exhibit trends in physical properties, like increasing atomic and ionic radii down the group due to additional energy levels from lithium to francium .
Down the alkali metal group, atomic size increases due to added electron shells, which weakens metal-to-metal bonding as the outer electrons are less tightly held and free to move. This results in decreased hardness and lower melting and boiling points, accounting for the gradual softening of the metals down the group from lithium to cesium, reflecting diminished bonding strength within the metallic lattice .
Increasing atomic mass in a group such as the alkaline earth metals correlates with increasing atomic and ionic radii, lower ionization energies, and increased metallic character. These changes often result in greater reactivity, as larger atoms lose electrons more easily, and diminished solubility. For instance, the heavier alkaline earth metals such as barium exhibit more pronounced metallic behavior and form less soluble compounds than lighter members like magnesium .
Halogens possess seven valence electrons, positioned in Group VII of the periodic table, reflecting their strong electron affinity and high reactivity due to their nearly complete valence shells. As a result, halogens eagerly gain electrons to achieve noble gas configurations, which is why they typically form negative ions or partake in covalent bonding. Their reactivity decreases down the group due to increased atomic radius and reduced electron affinity .
Among halogens, atomic and ionic radii increase down the group from fluorine to iodine due to the addition of electron shells. This increase in size affects the chemical behavior as larger atoms exhibit less nuclear attraction to captured electrons, resulting in reduced electronegativity and reactivity. Additionally, halogens form larger ions due to electron-electron repulsion and added shell size, impacting their interactions in ionic bonding scenarios .
Experiments involving alkali metals require cautious handling due to their high reactivity. Protective measures include conducting reactions in water in well-ventilated areas or fume hoods to mitigate explosive risks from hydrogen gas, using minimal quantities to prevent uncontrolled reactions, and avoiding contact with skin due to caustic burns from metal hydroxides. Specific limitations, like avoiding potassium with chlorine in laboratory settings, prevent hazardous explosions .
Upon exposure to air, alkali metals first react with atmospheric moisture to form metal hydroxides and hydrogen gas. Subsequently, these hydroxides can react with atmospheric carbon dioxide, resulting in hydrated metal carbonates. For example, lithium reacts to form lithium hydroxide first, which further transforms into lithium carbonate with carbon dioxide. These reactions demonstrate the metals' high reactivity and the potential for sequential reaction processes .
