A Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is a hierarchical decomposition of a project
into smaller, manageable components, breaking down the total scope into work
packages that define deliverables, tasks, and responsibilities. It helps in
organizing, planning, and tracking project progress by ensuring all necessary
work is clearly structured and assigned.

2.​ WBS Characteristics
The Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) effectiveness depends on several key
characteristics:

These characteristics ensure that the WBS is practical, comprehensive, and


useful for planning, executing, and controlling a project.
3.​ MECE Principle
The concepts of Mutually Exclusive and Collectively Exhaustive ensure that
the WBS is well-structured, comprehensive, and free from overlaps or gaps.

●​ Mutually Exclusive (i.e., independent): Each component or work


package in the WBS should be distinct and not overlap with any other
component.
●​ Collectively Exhaustive (i.e., 100% rule): The WBS should include
100% of the work required to complete the project, with no gaps or
missing components.
