NAME: OYEWOLE OLAYEMI O

MATRIC NO: 219041004

COURSE TITLE: PROJECT MANAGEMENT (CHG 854)

ASSIGNMENT:
Using a Scenario based approach describe a project that you handled in your previous job?
Note: Describe all the steps involved from the time of project initiation to project completion
and how do you keep your team members motivated?

SOLUTION
Scenario: Project Management in an Oil and Gas Company
Project: Upgrading the Gas Compression System
The steps were undertaken as follows:
Project Initiation: In my previous role as a Process and Instrument Engineer at
NNPC Exploration & Production Limited (NEPL) formally known as NPDC, I was assigned to
lead a project aimed at upgrading our gas compression system in one of our stations. The need for
this project arose from the increasing demand for natural gas and the aging equipment in our
existing compression system in the station. The project was initiated based on the need to enhance
production capacity and maintain operational efficiency.
Planning: In the planning phase, my team and I conducted a detailed assessment of the existing
compression system, including equipment condition, capacity limitations, and safety
considerations. We also defined project objectives, scope, budget, and a rough timeline.
Furthermore, we procured the necessary permits and regulatory approvals from NMDPRA. Our
estimated cost for this project was approximately 50 million Naira and a 5-month timeline.
Execution: The execution phase involved procuring new compressors, instruments, piping and
control systems. We hired contractors and technicians for installation. I supervised the installation,
ensuring compliance with safety standards and project specifications. The team size consisted of
8 people, including contractors and in-house engineers. Moreover, we held regular team meetings
to monitor progress and address issues promptly.
Monitoring and Control: Throughout the project, we implemented a rigorous monitoring and
control system. We used project management software such as Gnatt chart and Excel to track
progress, expenditures, and timelines. Weekly meetings were held to review milestones and
address any issues promptly. This kept the project on track and within budget.
Team Motivation: To keep the team motivated, I encouraged open communication, recognized
achievements, and provided opportunities for professional development. We set achievable short-
term goals to maintain enthusiasm and a sense of accomplishment.
Challenges Encountered:
1. Weather Delays: The project faced an unforeseen challenge in project management due to
its urgency coinciding with the heavy rainy season. Unexpected weather conditions,
including frequent heavy rains, intermittently caused delays in the outdoor installation
work. To mitigate this impact, we promptly adjusted our schedule.
2. Supply Chain Disruptions: Global supply chain disruptions affected the timely delivery
of some critical components. We had to work closely with suppliers to resolve these issues.
3. Scope Creep: During the execution phase, additional requirements were requested by
stakeholders and customers. We carefully assessed their impact on the project timeline and
budget before incorporating them.
4. Resource Allocation: It proved challenging as we had to strike a delicate balance between
project-specific tasks and the ongoing operational demands, ensuring that neither aspect
suffered from the allocation decisions.

Project Completion: After months of dedicated effort and teamwork, we achieved the successful
conclusion of the gas compression system upgrade project. The newly implemented system has
substantially boosted our production capacity and efficiency, effectively addressing the burgeoning
demand for natural gas in the area. Additionally, we conducted Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)
and provided on-site training to equip the operators with the necessary skills and knowledge to
operate the new system seamlessly.
In summary, this project has not only been a tremendous learning experience but has also
highlighted the crucial importance of meticulous planning, vigilant monitoring, and adaptability
in the dynamic field of natural gas production. I am also proud to mention that I received a letter
of recognition for my exceptional contribution to the project, which reaffirmed the value of
effective project management, strong team leadership, and innovative problem-solving.
