Summary
As manager perform these roles,
Mintzberg proposed that their
activities included both reflection
(thinking) and action (doing).
Such as: listening to customer’s
issues is reflection, solving them is
action.
Interpersonal roles:
Figurehead
Leader
Liaison
Figurehead:
symbolic head, obliged to perform a number of routine duties of a
legal or social nature
Greeting visitors, signing legal documents.
Leader:
Guide and supervise subordinates.
Staffing & training , motivating staff.
Liaison:
Maintain information links in and beyond the organization.
Liaising with overseas business support manager, acknowledging
mail, doing external board work.
Informational roles
Monitor
Disseminator
Spokesperson
Monitor:
Collect information from internal & external sources.
Daily stock count, control of cash & costs,
maintaining personal contacts.
Disseminator:
Share information internally & externally.
Regular meetings for the exchange of information,
making phone calls to relay information.
Spokesperson:
Convey information to outsider on organization’s
plans, policies, actions, etc.
Hold board meetings, giving information to the
media.

Entrepreneur:
Initiate ideas to bring in innovation &
improvement.
Upgrade service & review new designs of
restaurant.
Disturbance handler:
Take remedial actions. Responsible for corrective
action when organization faces important
unexpected disturbances
Restaurants remained closed during the riots for
security measures.
Resource Allocator
Distribution of resources.
Budget, Scheduling; performing any
activity that involves budgeting and the
programming of subordinates’ work .
Negotiator
Take part in negotiation activities.
Handle customer complaints.
Dealing with suppliers for better prices.
Participating in union contract
negotiations.
