Key Vocabulary
Area
Definition: The amount of space inside a shape.
Example: The area of a rectangle with side lengths 4 and 5 is (4 \times 5 = 20) square units.
Rectangle
Definition: A four-sided shape with opposite sides that are equal and all angles are right
angles.
Example: A rectangle with a width of 3 units and a height of 7 units.
Tiling
Definition: Covering a surface with shapes (like squares) without any gaps or overlaps.
Example: Using 1x1 square tiles to cover a rectangle of 4x3.
Multiply
Definition: To find the total of equal groups.
Example: (3 \times 4 = 12) means there are 3 groups of 4.
Additive
Definition: Related to addition; combining numbers to find a total.
Example: The area of two separate rectangles can be added together to find the total area.
Rectilinear Figure
Definition: A shape made up of straight lines and angles.
Example: A shape that is made up of squares and rectangles.
Perimeter
Definition: The distance around a shape.
Example: The perimeter of a rectangle with lengths 4 and 6 is (2(4 + 6) = 20) units.
Unknown Side Length
Definition: A missing measurement of one side in a shape.
Example: If a rectangle has a perimeter of 30 units and one side is 10 units, the unknown side
length can be found.
Rhombus
A four-sided, or quadrilateral, geometric figure in which all four sides are of the same length
and each of the two pairs of opposite sides are parallel to each other.
