Boiler Formulas and Manufacturers
Common Conversion Factors Boiler HP x 34.5 Boiler HP x .069 Boiler HP x 33.4 Boiler HP x 139 BTU/Hour Output 240 EDR/1000 x 0.5 Lbs of Steam /Hr 500 = Lbs. of Steam per Hour = Evaporation Rate Gallons per Minute (GPM) = MBTU per Hour Output (MBH) = Sq. Feet of Equivalent Direct Radiation (EDR) = Sq. Feet of Equivalent Direct Radiation (EDR) = Evaporation Rate Gallons per Minute (GPM) = Evaporation Rate Gallons per Minute (GPM)
Condensate Pump Sizing Evaporation Rate x 3 Pump GPM x 1 = Pump GPM Required = Receiver Tank Size (Gallons Storage)
Example: 2,400,000 output boiler 240 10,000 EDR 1000 2 5 GPM x 3 15 GPM x 1 Boiler Feed Unit Sizing Evaporation Rate x 1.85 Evaporation Rate x 20
= 10,000 EDR = 5 GPM = 15 GPM pump capacity = 15 gallon tank
= Pump GPM Required = Receiver Tank Size (Gallon Storage @ 20 minutes)
Rule of Thumb: Use one gallon of storage per boiler horsepower.
Example: 3,347,900 output boiler 33,479 = 100 BHP 100 BHP x .069 = 6.9 GPM 6.9 GPM x 1.85 = 12.7 Pump GPM Req. 6.9 GPM x 20 = 138 Gallons Storage
Determining Existing Tank Capacity
Square Tank Volume Round Tank Volume
= H" x W" x L" 231 = R" x R" x 3.141 x L" 231
= Gallons Capacity = Gallons Capacity
H is height, W is width, L is length, R is radius
Circulation Pump Sizing
BTU GPM ^T
= 500 x GPM x ^T = BTU 500 x ^T = BTU 500 x GPM
^T is the change in temperature

Did You Know? 1. Many boilers are misapplied? 2. Energy Reduction upgrades are available for your current equipment? 3. Some boilers cost more to maintain than others? 4. High Burner Turndown can shorten boiler life? 5. Some boilers are safer to operate than others? 6. Boiler steam space can affect your plant operation? 7. Changing out a boiler is not as simple as like-for-like? 8. Some boilers fit certain applications better than others? 9. Hot oil can be better than high pressure steam? 10. Air and Dirt in your hydronic system may be a high and unknown expense?
