What is the Saxon Genitive?
Saxon genitive (also called possessive 's) shows possession — it tells
us that something belongs to someone or something.
You form it by adding:
's to a singular noun (even if it ends with "s")
' (just an apostrophe) to a plural noun that already ends in "s"
✅ How to use it:
Rule Example
Singular noun + 's This is John's car.
Plural noun ending in -s + ' These are the teachers' books.
Irregular plural noun (not ending in -s) The children's toys are
+ 's everywhere.
For people, animals, time, My sister's dog. / A week's
organizations holiday. / The company's policy.
If two people own the same thing, add Tom and Jerry's apartment. (one
's to the second person only apartment for both)
❗ Common mistakes to avoid:
Use of instead of 's for non-living things:
✖ The table's leg → ✔ The leg of the table
