TRANSITIONAL DEVICES (ENGLISH COMPULSORY)
Definition & Explanation: Transitional devices are words or phrases that help connect ideas, sentences, or
paragraphs in writing.
Why we use transitional devices:
To improve flow and coherence
To link sentences and paragraphs
To show relationships between ideas
To guide the reader clearly
To avoid abrupt or confusing shifts
To emphasize important points
To organize information logically
Types of Transitional Devices:
Type Description Examples
Addition Adds more information also, in addition, furthermore, moreover
Contrast Shows difference or opposition however, on the other hand, nevertheless
Comparison Shows similarity similarly, likewise, just as
Cause and Effect Shows reason and result because, therefore, thus, consequently
Time/Sequence Shows order or time first, next, then, after, finally
Clarification Explains or restates in other words, that is to say, to clarify
Emphasis Stresses a point indeed, in fact, most importantly
Concession Acknowledges opposing view although, even though, though
Conclusion/Summary Summarizes or concludes in conclusion, to sum up, finally
Examples/Illustration Gives examples for example, for instance, such as
