Class 10 Mathematics - Chapter 3: Pair of Linear Equations in Two Variables

Question Paper (Max Marks: 40, Time: 1.5 Hours)

Section A: (1 mark each) - Easy

1. Write the standard form of a pair of linear equations in two variables.

2. Determine whether the following pair of equations has a unique solution, infinitely many solutions, or no

solution:

2x + 3y = 6, 4x + 6y = 12

3. Find the value of k if the system of equations 3x + ky = 9, 6x + 12y = 18 has infinitely many solutions.

Section B: (2 marks each) - Easy to Moderate

4. Solve the following pair of linear equations by substitution method:

x + y = 7, x - y = 3

5. Solve the pair of equations graphically:

x + y = 5, 2x - y = 4

6. Find the solution for the pair:

2x + 3y = 12, x - y = 1 using the elimination method.

Section C: (3 marks each) - Moderate

7. The sum of the digits of a two-digit number is 9. If the digits are reversed, the number increases by 27.

Find the number.

8. Draw the graphs of the equations x + 2y = 6 and 2x + 4y = 12. Determine the nature of the solutions.

9. Solve:

5x - 3y = 13,

3x - 5y = 7 using cross multiplication method.

Section D: (4 marks each) - Moderate to Hard

10. A boat takes 2 hours to travel 20 km downstream and 4 hours to return upstream. Find the speed of the

boat in still water and the speed of the stream.

11. The difference between two numbers is 26. Five times the smaller number is equal to three times the

larger number. Find the numbers.

12. The sum of a father's age and his son's age is 60 years. Six years ago, the father's age was five times the

son's age. Find their present ages.

Answer Key

1. ax + by + c = 0 and dx + ey + f = 0

2. Infinitely many solutions (since equations are multiples of each other).

3. k = 4 (to make the system dependent).

4. x = 5, y = 2

5. Graphical solution: Intersection point is x = 3, y = 2.

6. x = 3, y = 2

7. Number is 36.

8. Lines coincide; infinitely many solutions.

9. x = 2, y = -1

10. Speed of boat = 6 km/h, speed of stream = 4 km/h

11. Smaller = 13, Larger = 39

12. Father's age = 42, Son's age = 18
