Exercise 2: Visual Harmony Through Arrangement

Objective

To understand how objects of different sizes, textures, patterns, and colors interact in a composition
to create visual balance, rhythm, contrast, and unity.

Materials Required

 A selection of objects of various sizes (blocks, household items, stationery, natural items
like leaves, stones, etc.)
 Items with different textures (smooth, rough, soft, hard, etc.)
 Items or papers with patterns (stripes, polka dots, checks, organic patterns, etc.)
 Colorful materials (colored paper, fabrics, toys, packaging)
 A3 sheets or board as a base
 Scissors, glue, tape, string
 Smartphone or camera (for documentation)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Phase 1: Observation and Selection

1. Briefing: Introduction to the concepts of scale, color theory, texture, and visual balance.
2. Object Selection: Gather 15–20 objects of different sizes, textures, and colors. Include at least:
- 3 contrasting textures
- 3 different color families
- 3 patterned elements

Phase 2: Initial Explorations

1. Warm-up Compositions: Create 3 trial compositions focusing on:


a. Size contrast
b. Texture variety
c. Color harmony or discord
2. Peer Feedback: Discuss compositions in pairs.
3. Final Selection: Choose one direction to develop further.

Phase 3: Final Composition

Arrange selected objects to form a balanced and aesthetically pleasing composition, considering:
- Focal points and hierarchy
- Negative space
- Flow and rhythm
- Texture and pattern contrast
- Color interaction
Optional: Instructor provides feedback midway
Phase 4: Documentation and Reflection

1. Documentation: Photograph the final composition.


2. Reflection Sheet: Write answers to:
- What was your initial idea and how did it evolve?
- Which visual principles guided your decisions?
- What would you do differently next time?
3. Group Discussion: Share learnings.
