Languages (ESOL)

Introduction
The ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) major is widely recognized as a graduate
degree in the field of language teaching and education. The Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in English
for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program is recommended for students interested in the
humanities with a concentration on the English language and language teaching and for those
who are interested in obtaining a firm foundation for further study in English language teaching.
It is suitable for those in any educational context.
Program objectives
This program is aimed at training students enabling to use the English language for academic and
professional purposes. It will provide students with skills required for professions related to
language education. The graduates are expected to have a thorough knowledge and expertise in
the English language and literature, in the area studies, and also have basic ideas of the science
of language. The program will produce efficient English language practitioners and professionals
as there is a serious dearth of professionals in English in [Link] objective of the present
degree is to produce English language experts and professionals in Bangladesh.

The Framework for the Curriculum of B.A. in English for Speakers of Other Languages
(ESOL) Program
This curriculum is for B.A. in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program. It has
been designed in a way that it complies with the objectives of the Institute of Modern Languages
(IML) as a site of foreign language education, and maintains the uniformity among the contents
of the curriculum of different foreign languages.

The program will be carried out in 4 academic years into Eight [Link] academic year is
divided into 2 semesters. During this program, 32 courses will be offered as requirement of the
degree. The value of each course is to be weighed in terms of credits.
- Duration of the program: 4 Years (2 Semesters each year)
- Total Semesters: 8
- Classes: 15 Weeks per semester
- 2 weeks will be exam preparatory leave.
- Number of 4 credit courses: 32
- Total Credits: 128
- Total Marks: 100x32=3200
- 15-hour teaching is equivalent to 1 Credit hour.

V. Evaluation policy
The total performance of a student in each course is will be based on a scheme of continuous
assessments. All examination will be held according to the university academic calendar. The
breakdown is as follows:
a) Attendance and Participation 05%
b) Viva/Class test/Assignments 15%
c) Mid Term 20%
d) Semester Final examination 60%
Total 100%
(a) Viva/Class Test/Assignments:
Marks will be given through viva, class tests, and assignments.
(b) Mid Term:
Mid Term examination will be held according to the academic schedule announced at the
beginning of a semester. Students who fail to appear at the mid semester examination will not be
eligible for the semester final examination.
c) Semester Final Examinations:
Semester final examinations will be held after two week’s study recess at the end of the
semester. The duration of each examination will be 3 (three) hours for a 4 (three) credit course.
According to DU regulation, a student must attend at least 75% classes in each course to sit for
the semester final examination.
Grading System
Students will be awarded letter grades according to the grading system followed by Dhaka
University in accordance with the uniform grading system promulgated the University Grant
Commission (UGC) (effective from 13.06.2006). The letter grades and their corresponding grade
points are as follows:
