INTEGRATED SCIENCE
LAB # 4
Title: Diffusion
Aim: To investigate diffusion in water using potassium permanganate
Apparatus / materials:
- Water
- Beaker
- Potassium permanganate
- Spatula
Diagram:

DIAGRAM SHOWING DIFFUSION OF POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE

Method:
- A large beaker was filled to three quarter with water.
- The beaker was set aside, out of direct sunlight, for 10 minutes so the water would remained still.
- A spatula was used to drop a piece of potassium permanganate into the water.
- Observations were made and recorded.
Results:
Before After

TABLE SHOWING DIFFUSION OF POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE

Discussion:
-Define diffusion.
- Why is potassium permanganate used in diffusion experiment?
-What was the colour of the KMnO4?
-What was the colour of the water before the KMnO4 was added?
-How did the kmNo4 move in the water?
-What was the colour of the water after one hour?
-At the start, where in the beaker were the particles of the dye in highest concentration? How were you able to
tell where the point of highest concentration was?
-Explain why the KMnO4 particles were able to move through the water without being stirred.
-Explain the distribution of the dye in the water after one hour.

Reflections: How is this experiment relevant to you and society? What did you learn from this experiment?

Conclusion: Summarize findings and relate to Aim.
