Writing – up the Research


Planning Strategy
Important advices from most authors
• Use a brainstorming approach and put down all the main points that come
to mind.
• You do not have to start the process of writing the chapters in your research
report in any particular order.
• Do not finalize your introductory chapter, or even your title, until the end.
• An appropriate chapter to work on at an early stage is your literature
review.
• Next is the methodology chapter, which can be finalized once you have
enough information to describe the more detailed aspects of the methods of
data collection and analysis you have used.
• It is useful to draw up a timetable showing the critical dates when different
sections will be completed.
Wrting style

• You should write your dissertation or thesis to inform and not to


impress.
• Three key elements of the readibility of the text:
• Interesting – should catch your reader’s attention
• Legible – good typography and layout
• Easy to understang – the comphrehension
• Use spelling and grammar checker software

Assignment – 2 – Reviewing a Thesis
You will be given an actual thesis of AAU Master’s graduates in Business fields.
Based on the thesis and based on the above outline of thesis:
1. As an Introdcution, give your overall view about the thesis.
2. Identify the parts that are not included in the thesis.
3. Report the overall writing style of the thesis based on the above criteria.
4. Describe the problem of the reseach stated in your own words.
5. Identify if the research has a research question or hypothesis, and report the
same.
6. See if the problem statement, objecitve and the research question/problem are
consistent. Report your answer.
7. Report what methodology (sampling and data collection) are used.
8. Report the analysis method used (what was tested), and also the soft ware.
9. Write something new you learned from reading the thesis that you did not
learn in class.
