Argumentative Writing Study Guide

Structure:

Introduction: Main Claim and Background information about the topic

Body Paragraphs: Topic sentence, evidence, reasoning

Conclusion: Restate your main claim and summarize your main points

Steps to Writing and Argumentative Essay:

1.​ Read and analyze the title and the prompt. The prompt is telling you
what to write about.
2.​ Read the text and annotate for evidence.
3.​ Determine your position on the argument. Determine your claim
statement.
4.​ Briefly plan your essay.
5.​ Write your essay.
6.​ Revise your work and look for errors in spelling and grammar.

Don’t Forget!

●​ Indent your paragraphs


●​ Add a title
●​ Add textual evidence in quotation marks
●​ Read over your essay when you are finished
●​ Use transition phrases
●​ DO NOT write in first person
●​ DO NOT start a sentence with and, but, or, because, etc.
