Rationale The activity "Cultivating Community Gardens for Sustainable

Living" holds immense significance for the residents of Purok
San Isidro in Barangay Macangao (Navarro et al., 2024). With
the escalating concerns over environmental degradation and
food insecurity, the initiative aims to foster a sense of
communal responsibility towards sustainable living practices.
Establishing community gardens can provide an avenue for
locals to actively engage in the cultivation of fresh produce,
thereby promoting healthier dietary habits and reducing
reliance on commercially grown foods with uncertain origins
(Galhena, 2023).
Moreover, these gardens serve as educational hubs, offering
valuable insights into organic farming techniques and
biodiversity conservation, fostering a deeper understanding of
the interconnectedness between human actions and the
environment. Through this activity, we envision a resilient
community empowered with the knowledge and skills to
nurture not only their gardens but also a sustainable future for
generations to come.
Furthermore, the "Cultivating Community Gardens for
Sustainable Living" initiative holds the potential to foster social
cohesion and economic empowerment within Purok San
Isidro. By bringing together people from diverse backgrounds
to work towards a common goal, the activity encourages
collaboration and mutual support, strengthening the
community's solidarity bonds. Additionally, the surplus
produced from these gardens can be utilized to support local
or sold at markets, generating income opportunities for
residents and contributing to the economic resilience of the
area.

Thus, according to (Pelayo, 2024) beyond its environmental

benefits, this activity has the power to catalyze positive social
and economic change, enhancing the overall well-being and
prosperity of Purok San Isidro in Barangay Macangao.
Through hands-on involvement in garden cultivation,
participants will gain practical knowledge about organic
farming techniques, biodiversity conservation, and the

 importance of locally sourced food.

Ultimately, the activity seeks to create a replicable model for

sustainable living that not only benefits the environment but
also strengthens social cohesion and economic empowerment
within the community.

Mainly, the project aims to empower the residents of Purok

San Isidro in Barangay Macangao through community
Main Objective gardening. Specifically:
1. To actively participate in sustainable agriculture
practices.
2. To promote environmental stewardship, enhance food
security, and foster a sense of community ownership
and resilience.

Methodology
1. Community Assessment and Engagement:
 Engage residents of Purok San Isidro in
Barangay Macangao to gauge interest and
identify potential garden sites.
 Assess community needs, preferences, and
resources to tailor the garden project
accordingly.
2. Site Selection and Preparation:
 Identify suitable land within the community for
gardening, considering factors such as sunlight
exposure, soil quality, and accessibility.
 Prepare the chosen site by clearing debris,
testing soil, and amending as needed to create
optimal growing conditions.
3. Garden Design and Layout:
 Develop a garden layout plan that maximizes
space utilization, incorporates sustainable
practices, and aligns with community
preferences.
 Include features like raised beds, composting
areas, and pathways to enhance functionality
and accessibility.
4. Plant Selection and Establishment:
 Select a diverse range of plants suited to local
climate and soil conditions, emphasizing native
species and food crops.
 Acquire seeds, seedlings, or plants from local
suppliers or through community exchanges.
 Establish planting beds or plots and arrange
plants according to their space and sunlight
requirements.
5. Community Involvement and Maintenance:
 Organize community workdays or gardening
workshops to involve residents in planting,

 watering, weeding, and maintenance tasks.
 Establish a schedule for ongoing garden care
and maintenance, assigning responsibilities to
volunteers or rotating tasks among participants.
 Provide training and support to community
members to build gardening skills and foster a
sense of ownership and pride in the garden.
6. Education and Outreach:
 Offer educational programs and workshops on
sustainable gardening practices, environmental
stewardship, and healthy eating habits.
 Utilize signage, newsletters, social media, and
community events to promote the garden
project and engage with the broader
community.
 Collaborate with local schools, organizations,
and institutions to integrate the garden into
educational and outreach activities.
7. Monitoring and Evaluation:
 Regularly assess the progress and impact of
the community garden project through
observation, feedback, and data collection.
 Monitor plant growth, yield, and pest
management efforts to identify areas for
improvement or adjustment.
 Solicit input from community members to
evaluate the garden's effectiveness in meeting
its goals and addressing community needs.

Day 3: Gardening Practices and Maintenance Training
 Conduct workshops on composting, water
conservation, and organic pest management.
 Empower residents with the knowledge and skills
