TTT Diagram
The diagram that illustrates the transformation of austenite as a function of time for a constant
temperature is a Time-Temperature Transformation (TTT) or Isothermal Transformation (IT) diagram.
TTT diagram gives the kinetics of isothermal transformation.
These curves have “C” or “S” shape in plain carbon steel and alloy steels.
Each steel composition has its own different TTT curves for a given grain size (without inclusion).
Incubation Period: Transformation of austenite does not start immediately on quenching austenitized
sample to a constant temperature bath because enough diffusion has not taken place in austenite to start
transformation. Transformation of austenite to ferrite-cementite mixture occurs after a definite time. This
time during which transformation does not proceed is known as Incubation period.
Determination of TTT diagram for Eutectoid Steel:
For the determination of TTT or Isothermal Transformation diagrams, we consider molten salt bath
technique combined with metallography and hardness measurements.
In molten salt bath technique two salt baths and one water bath are used.
Salt bath-I is maintained at austenising temperature (780°C for eutectoid steel).
Salt bath-II is maintained at specified temperature at which transformation is to be determined
(below A1), typically 700-250°C for eutectoid steel.
Bath-III which is a cold water bath is maintained at room temperature.
In bath-I number of samples are austenite at A1 + (20-40°C) for eutectoid steel; A3 + (20-40°C) for
hypo-eutectoid steel and ACm + (20-40°C) for hyper-eutectoid steels for about an hour.
Then samples are removed from bath-I and put in bath-II and each one is kept for different specified
period of time. After specified times, the samples are removed and quenched in cold water. The
microstructure of each sample is studied using metallographic techniques. The type, as well as
quantity of phases, is determined on each sample.
The same process is repeated a number of times at varying transformation temperatures, typically
0
700-250 C for eutectoid steel.
If no transformation occurs in a specified time during its stay for definite time in Salt bath-II, it
transforms to 100% martensite when put in water bath.
If some transformation occurs in Salt bath-II, then remaining austenite transforms to martensite in
water bath.
