THE IMPACT OF MODULAR DISTANCE LEARNING ON THE WRITING SKILLS OF GRADE 12 STUDENT AT

DALUPAON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

I. CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

Most countries around the world have temporarily closed educational institutions to contain the spread
of the virus and reduce infections (Tria, 2020). Face to face engagement of students and teachers within
the school has also been suspended. The Philippines is in the process of adapting to the new normal
form of education at present, and continuous innovations of educators and active involvement of other
stakeholders are the driving force for its success. For the continuity of education and for every school to
still attain its mission and vision which is to provide quality education to every Filipino learner, the
Department of Education implemented the Modular Distance Learning.

Writing is an activity or process to express idea or opinion. The need to write in English has emerge to be
the fundamental in the present worldwide network since it permits subjects from diverse societies to
convey through letters, messages, business reports, site pages, and so forth (Gaviria, 2016; Weigle,
2001). The definitions of writing are variously state by some experts. According to Brown (2001), writing
is a thinking process. It requests conscious intellectual effort, which usually must be supported over an
extensive period of time (Elsalahat, 2014). Furthermore, it come with idea that writing can be planned
and given with an unlimited number of revisions before its release. In addition, Urquhart and McIver
(2005, p.5) state that;

According to Harmer (2004), there are a lot of importance in learning writing. Firstly, as in writing,
students frequently have more time to think than they do in oral activity. Secondly, they can go through
what they know in their minds, and even consult dictionaries, grammar books, or other reference
material to help them. Thirdly, writing also encourage students to focus on accurate language use and
because they think as they write, it may well provoke language development as they resolve problems
which the writing puts into their mind. Another importance of writing also state by Camilleri, Ford, &
Sollars (2007) that writing offer a way of maintaining social relationships and sharing personal
information. It also assists participants to develop skills which make them persuasive, critical

Modular learning is the most popular type of Distance Learning. In the Philippines, this learning modality
is currently used by all public schools because according to a survey conducted by the Department of
Education (DepEd), learning through printed and digital modules emerged as the most preferred
distance learning method of parents with children who are enrolled this academic year (Bernardo, J).
This is also in consideration of the learners in rural areas where internet is not accessible for online
learning.

According to the Department of Education (DepEd), parents and guardians' perform the various roles in
Modular Learning such as Module-ator, Bundy-clock, and as Home Innovator. As a Module-ator, they are
the ones to get and submit the printed Self-Learning Modules (SLMs) from and to schools or barangay
halls at the beginning and end of the week, depending on the agreement between the parents and the
school. As a Bundy-clock, they must check their child's schedule or workweek plan. Because of the
number of subjects or activities to be done, they must see that it is being followed accordingly to avoid
cramming or delays in submission, which may affect the child's performance. Lastly, as a Home
Innovator, they must provide their child with a productive learning environment to help them focus
more on Learning. It must be a well-lighted and well-ventilated space in the house, with little or no
distraction.

The use of modules encourages independent study. One of the benefits of using modules for instruction
is the acquisition of better self-study or learning skills among students. Students engage themselves in
learning the concepts presented in the module. They develop a sense of responsibility in accomplishing
the tasks provided in the module. With little or no assistance from others, the learners progress on their
own. They are learning how to learn; they are empowered (Nardo, M.T.B, 2017). Other advantages of
modular instruction include more choice and self-pacing for students; more variety and flexibility for
teachers and staff; and increased adaptability of instructional materials.

In Dalupaon national high school there are 60 grade 12 students that encountered difficulties in writing
specially during the modular distance learning. According to their English subject teacher, Grade 12
students struggles a lot in constructing good sentences and paragraph. This research focuses on the
writing skills of the grade 12 students and be able to come up with recommendation and intervention to
address the said matter.

"They can use appropriate spelling, capitalization, and punctuation" as the reason why they have poor
performance on their writing skills. Showing that modular distance learning isn't effective on students
learning as what we expected it should be.

Common questions

Powered by AI

Modular distance learning has negatively impacted the writing skills of Grade 12 students at Dalupaon National High School. According to the study, 66% of the students struggle with writing skills, specifically in constructing good sentences and paragraphs. The students face challenges because the modular setup requires independent study, and they receive less direct guidance from teachers. This lack of interaction and immediate feedback may result in difficulties with complex language skills, such as quickly writing in English or using correct spelling, capitalization, and punctuation .

In the context of modular learning in the Philippines, parents play several critical roles. They act as 'Module-ators,' responsible for collecting and submitting Self-Learning Modules from and to schools or barangay halls. Parents also function as 'Bundy-clocks,' ensuring their children follow the prepared schedule or workweek plan to avoid cramming. Additionally, they serve as 'Home Innovators,' creating a conducive learning environment for their children .

Feedback plays a crucial role in enhancing students' writing skills in a modular learning environment, as it provides guidance and helps identify areas for improvement. According to the study, a lack of immediate feedback in modular learning can lead to poor writing skills. Feedback enables students to understand their mistakes, learn from them, and develop better writing techniques. Insufficient feedback can hinder students' ability to progress and adapt their skills effectively .

The concept of 'learning how to learn' in modular distance learning contributes significantly to student empowerment by fostering self-directed learning. Students develop the skill to navigate unfamiliar topics independently, which builds a sense of responsibility and accountability for their educational progress. This autonomy allows students to set their pace and choose materials that suit their learning styles, enhancing motivation and engagement. As a result, they become better equipped to face new challenges with confidence .

To address writing skill deficiencies within modular learning contexts, educational innovations include implementing refresher courses that specifically target writing skills. Additional activities designed to improve writing proficiency are also recommended. Engaging stakeholders such as teachers, parents, and administrators in awareness campaigns regarding writing competence is crucial. These approaches aim to provide comprehensive support and enhance the writing abilities of students in a modular learning environment .

Modular distance learning encourages the development of self-study skills as it requires students to engage independently with the learning materials. By relying on printed and digital modules, students are prompted to take charge of their educational activities, fostering a sense of responsibility and autonomy. This mode of learning helps students to learn at their own pace and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as they have to find solutions to obstacles they encounter in the learning process .

The study identified several underlying causes for poor writing skills among students during modular distance learning. A key factor is the inability of students to write quickly in English, stemming from inadequate practice and lack of comprehensive understanding during modular learning. Another significant issue is the difficulty with correct spelling, capitalization, and punctuation, likely attributable to limited feedback and interaction with educators, which are crucial for developing these skills .

The statistical findings from the study show that 66% of Grade 12 students at Dalupaon National High School struggle with poor writing skills during modular distance learning. Out of 50 respondents, 33 students reported difficulties, highlighting the widespread nature of the issue. Only 34% of the students did not report problems with their writing skills .

To mitigate the negative impact of modular distance learning on students' writing skills, several strategies have been proposed. These include implementing refresher courses and additional activities to enhance writing skills. The school suggests that parents and students agree on specific policies designed to support their writing development. Additionally, increasing awareness among teachers, parents, and administrators about maintaining writing competence is recommended .

In rural areas, the effectiveness of modular distance learning is often compromised by the lack of accessible internet, limiting students' ability to engage in online learning activities. This situation contrasts with many urban areas where internet access is more reliable, allowing for flexible use of digital resources. Consequently, students in rural areas might rely more heavily on printed materials and experience less interactive learning, which can impede their overall educational engagement and progress .
