Christianity: Christianity is an Abrahamic monotheistic religion
based on the life and teaching of Jesus of Nazareth. It’s the world’s largest
religion, its adherents, known as Christians, and believe that Jesus is the
Christ, whose coming as the messiah was prophesied in the Hebrew bible
called the Old Testament in Christianity and Chronicled in the New
testament. Christianity as one of the world largest religion remains
culturally diverse in its doctrines concerning justification and the nature of
salvation. Their creed generally holds in common, Jesus as the son of God-
who ministered, suffered and died on a cross but rose from the dead for
the salvation of mankind, and referred to as the gospels of Matthew, mark,
Luke and John. Today Christianity is more than a system of religious belief,
it has generated a culture a set of ideals and ways of life practices and
artifacts that have been handed down from generation to generation since
Jesus first became the object of faith.
BRANCHES OF CHRISTIANITY: Christianity is broadly split into three branches
Catholic
Orthodox
Protestant
The Catholic Church- Sometimes referred to as the Roman catholic church
is the largest Christian church worldwide. The catholic is the world oldest
and largest functioning international institution, it has played a prominent
role in the history and development of western civilization. The roman
catholic is being headed by Pope, who is the bishop of Rome and located in
Vatican City, Italy is the headquarter of the Roman catholic church. Catholic
expressed a deep devotion for the virgin Mary.
Orthodox: this is the second largest Christian church; the church has no
central doctrinal or governmental authority analogous to the bishop of
Roman (Roman catholic Pope). As one of the oldest surviving religious
institutions in the world, the orthodox church has played a prominent role
in the history and culture of Eastern and Southeastern Europe, the
orthodox shares same doctrines with the roman catholic church, the church
teaches that through consecration invoked by a priest, the sacrificial bread
and wine became the body and blood of Christ. The virgin Mary is
venerated in the orthodox church as the God bearer, honored in devotions.
Veneration which means the act of honoring a saint a person who has been
identified as having a high degree of sanctity or holiness.
The orthodox churches share with the other Christian churches the belief
that God revealed himself in Jesus Christ and a belief in the incarnation of
Christ, his crucifixion and resurrection.
Clerical Marriage – The vast majority of orthodox parish clergy are married
men, which is one of the major differences between the orthodox and
catholic churches. However, they must marry before being ordained to the
priesthood. The catholic church not only forbids clerical marriage, but
generally follows a practice of clerical celibacy, requiring candidates for
ordination to be unmarried.
Examples of orthodox church are – Anglican church, Christian Methodist
Episcopal church etc.
Protestant:The protestant is a form of Christianity that originated with the
16th century reformation, a movement against what its followers perceived
to be errors in the catholic church.
Protestant rejected the Roman Catholic Doctrine and Sacrament, they
emphasize the priesthood of all believers, justification by faith alone rather
than by good works. And affirm the bible as being the sole highest
authority, rather than also with sacred tradition.
Protestant which are popular known and refer to ‘’PENTICOSTAL
CHURCHES’’ which include the following
Apostolic church
Assemblies of God
Church of God in Christ etc.
RELIGIOUS BELIEF- Christians worldwide share basic conviction in faith,
there are also differences of interpretation and opinions of the bible and
sacred traditions on which Christianity is based (Creed).
Creed – creed is doctrinal statement or confession of religious beliefs, a
creed also known as a confession, Symbol, or Statement of Faith.
The apostles creed sometimes called the Apostolic creed or the symbols of
the Apostles – is an early statement of Christian belief or ‘’ Symbol’’ it is
widely used by a number of Christian denominations for both Liturgical and
Catechistical purposes, most visibly by liturgical churches including the
Roman catholic church, Anglicanism
TRINITY: The apostles creed beliefs in God the father, God the son and God
the Holy spirit. This is mostly used by both the catholic church, Anglican,
Orthodox, Methodists, and Congregationalists. This creed was apparently
used as a summary of Christian doctrine for baptismal candidates in the
churches of Roman.
DEATH AND RESURRECTION: Christians consider the resurrection of Jesus to
be the cornerstone of their faith 1st Corinthians 15, and the most important
event in history. According to the New Testament, Jesus was crucified, died
a physical death, was buried within a tomb and rose from the dead 3 days’
latter John 19:30, Mark 16:1, Mark 16:6.
SALVATION: Today modern Christian churches tend to be much more
concerned with how humanity can be saved from a universal condition of
sin.
DEATH AND AFTERLIFE: Most Christian believes that human beings
experience divine judgment and are rewarded either with eternal life or
eternal damnation.
