Job title Utility Person – Dock Shop

Job purpose

Support the Carpentry/ Dock Shop by completing unskilled labor duties and some intermediate
carpentry skills. 1st, 2nd and 3rd class levels are based on proficiency, knowledge, skills and
abilities. This job description applies to all positions listed below:

• Carpentry/Dock Shop

Duties and responsibilities

(Duties and responsibilities, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include
the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. This list of tasks is illustrative
ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in
this class. It does not imply that all positions within the class perform all of the duties listed, nor
does it necessarily list all possible duties that may be assigned.)

1. Beginning to Intermediate Carpentry skills

2. Sets up and operates wood working tools to cut, form and finish job. Erects or dismantles
structures, repairs or refinishes walls and structures.

3. Lubricates and maintains carpenter shop equipment.

4. Crates machinery and other equipment for shipment.


5. Performs assigned labor jobs, product repair and salvage reclaim (hand rework only), scrap
disposal and stacking of empty pallets. Climbs in and out of tanks for cleaning purposes, or if
qualified, pick up unused equipment, upon completion of jobs.

6. Works under the direction of and receives job training from department lead person.

7. Employees with previous training and experience as a forklift operator may sub for absent
forklift operator may sub for absent forklift operator, if employee confirms previous work
experience and the employee has a valid state motor vehicle operator’s license.

8. May be assigned to any unskilled job at the shipyard.

Work Environment

Work is regularly performed in outside weather conditions, including rain and extreme heat, near
moving mechanical parts and includes occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions and
to vibration.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an
employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

The employee is required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The
employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up
to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision,
color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Position Type/ Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday. This position
periodically requires long hours and weekend work. Regular and predictable on-site attendance
is an essential function and a prerequisite to perform other essential functions of the position.

Travel

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although periodic out-of-the-area and overnight
travel may be expected.

Required Education and Experience

1. High school degree or equivalent.

Preferred Education or Experience

Education based on requirements that are job-related and consistent with the business necessity.

1. Experience in a Shipyard/ Military setting.

2. A minimum of three to five years of related skill, knowledge or experience is needed for
these occupations. Must include related on-the-job training and experience in shipbuilding,
marine railways, floating dry docks, and carpenter work.
