SESSION –2024-25; PERIODIC ASSESSMENT - I
SUBJECT - SCIENCE
NAME _______________ TIME – 1hr

CLASS VI M.M - 20

General instructions:
 All questions are mandatory. Section A carries MCQs. Section B carries short and competency based
questions.
Section A

Q1. Multiple choice questions: (5×1=5)

A) Which vitamin is destroyed during heating?
a) Vitamin C b) Vitamin D c) Vitamin K d) Vitamin D
B) Our body prepares ___________ Vitamin in the presence of sunlight?
a) Vitamin A b) Vitamin B c) Vitamin D d) Vitamin K
C) Aarti placed two drops of a liquid on cooked rice which turned the rice blue- black. What could be the
liquid?
a) Vegetable oil b) Iodine solution c) Benedict's solution d) Nitrate solution
D) Imagine you are going to make a vessel for boiling water. Which one of the following would you choose as
a material?
a) Plastic b) Cotton c) Rubber d) Clay
E) The gas insoluble in water is __________
a) Oxygen b) Nitrogen c) Carbon Di oxide d) Ammonia

Section B
Q1. Answer the following Questions: (5×2=10)
a) Proteins are called body building foods. Why? Explain it
b) Paheli avoids eating vegetables but likes to eat biscuits, noodles and white bread. She frequently complains
of stomach ache and constipation. What are the food items that she should include in her diet to get rid of the
problem? Give a reason for your answer.
c) Differentiate between conductors and insulators with examples?
d) Define the term Solubility? How does it change on increasing the temperature of water?
e) Why Calcium is important for our body.

Q2 . Competency Based Question: (5×1=5)

A hard boiled egg is separated into two parts P and Q having different colors. The parts P and Q are mashed
separately and water is added to obtain their suspension. When the solution of copper sulphate is added to the
suspension of P, the solution remains blue. On the other hand when copper sulphate solution is added to
suspension Q then a violet color is produced.
i) Which nutrient is present in part Q and which is not present in part P?
ii) What is the colour of part Q of hard boiled egg?
iii) What is the colour of part P of hard boiled egg?
iv) Which nutrient could be present in part P which has not been tested?
v) Write the Function of Nutrient present in Part Q.

Vitamin D is synthesized in the skin from cholesterol when exposed to sunlight, specifically UVB radiation. Adequate sunlight exposure along with cholesterol presence is necessary for its production, highlighting the importance of moderate sun exposure for maintaining healthy vitamin D levels .

Distinguishing food parts based on nutrient content through chemical tests allows for precise dietary planning and the identification of nutrient deficiencies. For example, testing boiled egg parts for protein presence not only aids in understanding their nutritional value but also informs food choices for specific nutritional needs, emphasizing the utility of such chemical analyses .

The Biuret test is used to detect proteins, where a solution containing proteins produces a violet color upon the addition of copper sulfate due to the formation of a complex between the copper ions and peptide bonds. In a food sample, this test distinguishes proteins from other nutrients, as illustrated by the color change in part Q of a boiled egg when tested .

Iodine molecules insert themselves into the helical structure of amylose, a component of starch, resulting in a blue-black color. This color change is used as a qualitative test to confirm the presence of starch. Thus, when iodine is placed on foods like rice, a visible blue-black color indicates starch presence .

A hard-boiled egg contains proteins primarily in the white (albumen) and fats in the yolk. Cooking methods such as boiling can denature proteins, altering their structure without affecting nutritional value. The Maillard reaction, occurring during frying, can reduce some protein efficacy but enrich flavor. Hence, boiling is often preferred for retaining maximum nutritional content .

To alleviate constipation, increasing dietary fiber intake through vegetables, fruits, and whole grains is essential as these foods add bulk to the stool and ease its passage through the intestines. Fiber promotes digestive health by accelerating transit time and maintaining bowel regularity .

Conductors are materials that allow the free flow of electric charge, such as metals like copper and aluminum, used extensively in electrical wiring. Insulators, like rubber and plastic, restrict this flow and are used to coat wires to prevent accidental electric shocks. Their applications underline the importance of material choice based on intended electrical functions .

Vitamins are essential for various bodily functions, such as immunity, bone health, and metabolism. The stability of these vitamins during cooking is critical; for instance, Vitamin C is destroyed by heat, potentially reducing its intake if foods rich in it are cooked extensively. This instability requires careful preparation methods to preserve nutrients, ensuring adequate vitamin intake .

Increasing the temperature of water generally increases the solubility of solids because higher temperatures provide more kinetic energy, encouraging interactions between solute particles and solvents. However, the solubility of gases decreases with higher temperatures due to increased particle movement, promoting gas escape from the solution .

Calcium is crucial for bone and teeth development, aiding in maintaining bone structure and strength. It is also vital for muscle function, nerve signaling, and blood clotting. Ensuring adequate calcium intake helps prevent osteoporosis and other bone-related conditions .
