SCAMPER Activity on Progressive Era Issues

Students engaged in a SCAMPER activity to explore issues from the Progressive Era in U.S. history, focusing on topics like political corruption and women's rights. The activity fostered creative thinking and problem-solving, although some students were less participative than others. Reflecting on the experience, the instructor recognized the value of approaching problems from multiple angles to inspire innovative solutions.

‭Students worked on this SCAMPER activity after we discussed the Progressive Era in United‬

‭States History. We had talked about the Muckrakers and the impact they had on society and the‬
‭work they did. Students then were put in groups of 2-4 (originally it was 2-3 but I needed to add‬
‭some students to the groups). They tackled one issue that was a problem, challenge or concern‬
‭(political corruption, poverty, child labor, women’s rights, racial inequality, etc.) in the United‬
‭States during the late 1800s and early 1900s. They were then tasked with using the SCAMPER‬
‭activity to work through each part.‬

‭This activity was fun and creative for the students. They seemed to enjoy working through each‬
‭part of the activity which allowed them to rethink or re-examine parts of history and how things‬
‭might look differently with each component. I did notice that some students in the groups did not‬
‭participate as well as I would have liked them to and there were definite leaders and stronger‬
‭students who pulled the activity and discussion along. It did seem to take some groups longer to‬
‭get going and initiate conversation about each topic and it did seem that I had to steer them‬
‭towards a solution. I think if I were to do this again, I might come up with the scenario for each‬
‭letter in SCAMPER. I thought it might be more open and flexible for the students to come up‬
‭with their own ideas for each scenario, but I may need to rethink that in the future.‬

‭Reflecting on the SCAMPER activity, one key takeaway was the power of approaching a‬
‭problem or idea from multiple angles, which seemed to spark innovative solutions that might not‬
‭have been considered otherwise. It also encouraged creative thinking by pushing individuals to‬
‭think outside the box and explore unconventional possibilities, making it a valuable tool for‬
‭brainstorming and problem solving. Overall, the activity was a valuable tool for fostering creative‬
‭thinking and generating fresh ideas to effectively encourage individuals to challenge‬
‭assumptions.‬
