Unspecialized Plant Cell Overview

This document outlines a lesson plan for a Human and Social Biology class focused on cells and their importance in living organisms. Students will learn about cell specialization, identify different types of cells, and compare unspecialized plant and animal cells. The lesson includes various teaching methods such as discussions, presentations, and evaluations to assess student understanding.

4. Questions and Answers: Students will answer questions related to the topic.

MAIN POINTS Overview of cells

All organisms are made up from cells. these cells are used as bricks are used in a house, to build up the parts. Each cell
performs many metabolic activities. Approximately 60 000 000 000 cells make up the body of an average human. each new
cell comes from an existing cell that divides into two.

Specialized Cells in the Body

The human body is made up of microscopic cells. These building blocks of life combine and work in harmony to form the
functioning human body. While many cells make up simple body parts, such as tissues, some complete more complex and
specialized tasks. These specialized cells are specially designed to perform the functions for which they are intended. Each of these
cell types are formed and operate differently, ensuring that the cell can carry out the necessary body function that it is intended to
complete.

Unspecialized cells
1. Without specialty or specialization.
2. Having no special function and found in all multi cellular organisms.

Unspecialised Animal cell Unspecialised plant cell

Cell Organelles and functions

1. Cytoplasm- composed of the fluid and organelles of the cell

2. Endoplasmic Reticulum - allows passage of substances in the cell

3. Cell membrane - allows substances in and out of the cell by diffusion.

4. Ribosomes - make protein from amino acids.

5. Vacuoles- fluid -filled spaces in the cytoplasm

HUMAN AND SOCIAL BIOLOGY
6. Mitochondria - release energy from food during respiration.

7. Nucleus -contains chromosomes with genes having plans for making proteins.

8. Cell wall - helps support the plant cell when it is full of fluid.

9. Chloroplast (plant only) photosynthesis - makes sugars from water and carbon dioxide.

Epithelial cell  Line the cavities and
surfaces of structures in the
body

 form many glands

 it help in secretion,
selective absorption and
protection

Sperm cell  Specialise to fertilise egg

 the tail allows the sperm

cell to swim towards the
female sex cell.

Egg cells  Have a large nucleus

containing genetic
information from the
female.

 store food in the cytoplasm

Nerve cells A nerve cell is like a receiver,

transmitter and transmission line
with the task of passing a signal
along from its dendrites to the axon
HUMAN AND SOCIAL BIOLOGY
EVALUATION Students will answer the following questions
ONE 1. Which part of the cell releases energy during respiration?
2. What are the two main parts of the protoplasm?
3. Complete the paragraph by writing the correct answer from the list provided. (nervous cells, epithelial cells, muscle cells,
ribosome, mitochondria, chloroplast, greater, smaller)
Some cells in the human body require more energy than others. Most ___________________require more energy. This
energy is provided by the _______________________ which are present in __________________quantities in cells using a lot of
energy.

4. Explain the importance of the mitochondria to your mother.

5. Give examples of problem you would develop without cell specialisation.
6. State three differences between plant cell and animal cell.
