Simple Present Tense
Teacher Juliana
When we use The Simple Present Tense?
We use this grammar point to talk about habits, routine, things we do daily.
Let´s see some examples:
I wake up every day at 6:30 a.m. ( Eu me levanto ás 6:30 da manhã todos os dias.)
I have breakfast in the morning. (Eu tomo café da manhã de manhã).
We can use to talk about permanent situation.
Example: I live in São Paulo. (Eu moro em São Paulo)
I love my Family. ( Eu amo minha família).
And We also use to talk about facts.
Example: Water boils at 100°C. (Água ferve a 100°Celsius).
Affirmative Form
In the affirmative form, we have to change the verb when the pronoun is HE/SHE/IT:
Example: I like pizza
She likes pizza.
Pay attention!
*The general rule is to put “S” in the final of the verb:
He loves her.
*If the verb finishes with -ss, -x, -sh, -ch, put “ES” in the final of the verb:
He passes, she catches, he fixes, it pushes
*If the verb finishes with “O”, put “ES” in the final of the verb:
She goes shopping on weekends.
*If the verb finishes with “y” precedid by consonant, cut the “y” and put
“IES”:
CRY – It cries all the time.
FLY – He flies to Europe once a year.
*If the verb finishes with “y” precedid by vowel, follow the general rule, put S
in the final of the verb:
She plays basketball.
Exception – Have (I, you, We, They) Has (He, she, it)
So, the verb only changes in the affirmative form, and only for HE/SHE/IT.
Negative form
In the negative form, we have to use the auxiliar:
DO NOT = Don´t (I, you, we and they)
DOES NOT = Doesn´t (he, she, it)
I don´t like to study at night.
He doesn´t like to study at night.
See that when we use doesn´t, it´s not necessary to change the verb, the verb only
changes in the affirmative form, and only for he, she and it.
Interrogative
In the interrogative form, we have to use:
DO (I, you, we and they)
DOES (he, she, it)
Do you like English? Yes, I do/ No, I don´t.
Does she like to travel? Yes, she does/ No, she doesn´t.
See that when we use does, it´s not necessary to change the verb, the verb only
changes in the affirmative form, and only for he, she and it.
The structure: Verb Think (pensar, achar)
Afirmative Interrogative Negative
I think Do I think? I do not think / I don´t think
You think Do you think? You do not think/ you don´t think
He thinks Does he think? He does not think / he doesn´t think
