William Pickens (1881 - 1954) was an educator and advocate for the early Civil Rights
movement in the United States. In 1915, he was the primary Speaker at the national
convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
His book, The New Negro, was published the next year, followed by Bursting Bonds, Heir of
Slaves, in 1923.
