Poster Project Instructions

Overview
Each individual student will prepare a poster project. Each student will choose a state-of-
the-art communication technology. The goal of the poster project is to give an overview
of the technology as well discuss its potential to someone who is interested in
communication technologies but do not have an advanced knowledge of
communication systems.

The end product is a soft-copy version of an A3-size poster.

Objectives
The objectives of the individual student projects are to: 1) improve understanding of
communication systems, 2) obtain knowledge on state-of-the-art communication
technology, 3) develop proficiency in the preparation of concise statements of concepts.

Deliverables
A 1-page proposal is due on the 17th of June at midnight (hard deadline). The project
proposal should include a fairly detailed description of what you plan to do. You should
cite and briefly describe the papers you are using, what aspects of these papers you plan
to focus on, and how you propose to compare the different approaches in each paper. (one
should not have to read the papers to understand your project proposal). Your project
proposal will be graded independently of the final poster. The proposal grade will be based
on the level of detail and clarity in your description of the proposed work, as well as an
assessment as to whether you can complete the proposed work in the available time. You
are strongly urged to meet with the instructor prior to the project deadline to get feedback
on your project proposal. The instructor will also provide comments on early drafts of the
proposal if sent at least 1 week before the deadline.

The poster is due by midnight on 6th of July (hard deadline), and must be posted to your
project website by then. No extensions will be granted except for documented emergencies.

Items to be included in the poster

i) A brief descriptive title of the topic;

ii) An abstract giving the following:
a. Background (10-50 words)
b. Description of Technology (10-50 words)
c. Potential (20-100 words)
d. Conclusions (10-50 words)
If there are policy implications from this study, they should be briefly stated in the
“Abstract Conclusions” section and discussed below in sections vii and/or ix;

iii) A statement of your chosen technology, indicating background and motivation

(50-200 words);
iv) A table describing the key characteristics of your technology;
v) A graphical display (or displays) useful for understanding the chosen
technology;
vi) A paragraph describing the concept of your chosen technology (50-100 words);
vii) The table (or other) that presents the results of the main statistical tests you
conducted;
viii) A paragraph describing the analysis of the performance (50-100 words);
ix) A single paragraph describing the potential of the technology (20-100 words)

Important notes

1. Please focus on presenting 1-2 analysis points clearly. Don’t try to present lots of
complex material. One of the goals of this project is for you to develop the skill to
be able to present the results of an analysis in a clear, succinct manner that will
maximize the likelihood that it will convince others of your main conclusion(s). You
won’t get more points during grading if you fill up your poster with unnecessarily
complex detailed graphs and analyses; you will get fewer points.

2. The word limits specified above are purposefully designed for students in this
course to learn to succinctly describe research concepts. This is a skill the student
will find useful in their research career. A lead investigator will often need to
prepare an abstract for publication which covers the study background, methods,
results and conclusions with a typical overall word limit of 200-300 words. It is
recommended that the student write at least twice as much text as needed for the
poster and then condense it down to reach the word limits. Text initially written
to a target word limit often looks disjoint and sloppy. It is much better to edit down
the text.

Common questions

Powered by AI

Developing proficiency in preparing concise statements of concepts aids students in their academic careers by equipping them with the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and efficiently . This skill is crucial when writing abstracts, grant proposals, and discussing research findings, where brevity and clarity are valued. It allows students to effectively convey their work to a broader audience, including peers, journal reviewers, and funding bodies, thereby enhancing their academic visibility and opportunities .

Students are encouraged to focus on presenting 1-2 analysis points clearly rather than including extensive technical details because clarity in presentation maximizes the likelihood of convincing others of their main conclusions . Overloading the poster with detailed graphs and analyses can reduce grading points . This approach teaches students the skill of conveying research findings concisely, fostering their ability to communicate effectively in academic and professional contexts.

Focusing on "AI/ML-Based Adaptive Communication Systems" within the poster project context has significant potential impact as it aligns with the growing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in enhancing communication network efficiency and adaptability . By examining this area, students can explore cutting-edge developments, practical applications, and challenges, potentially contributing to innovations that optimize resource allocation and improve network performance in dynamic environments . Such research is valuable in advancing technology and addressing the challenges of modern communication systems.

The key objectives of the Communication Systems Poster Project are to improve understanding of communication systems, acquire knowledge on state-of-the-art communication technology, and develop proficiency in preparing concise statements of concepts . These objectives contribute to students' educational development by enhancing their comprehension of modern technologies, equipping them with relevant knowledge crucial for career advancements in communication systems, and honing their ability to succinctly communicate complex ideas, a skill valuable in academic and professional environments.

The suggested project areas reflect current trends in communication systems by encompassing cutting-edge technologies like 5G and 6G, quantum communication, AI-based systems, and sustainable networks . These areas indicate a movement towards more sophisticated, efficient, and secure communication technologies, highlighting the significance of integrating AI and sustainable practices. This implies future research will likely focus on enhancing these technologies' capabilities and addressing concerns such as security, efficiency, and environmental impact .

The project proposal process enhances students' skills in communicating research concepts effectively by requiring them to provide a detailed and clear description of their proposed work, including the citation and discussion of relevant papers . This process helps students develop clarity in their research planning and ensure that their ideas can be understood without extensive background knowledge, which is crucial for effective scientific communication . Additionally, the feedback from instructors aids in refining these skills.

Meeting with instructors before the proposal deadline is significant because it allows students to receive feedback on their project proposals, enhancing the quality and feasibility of their proposed work . This interaction helps students identify potential issues early in the process and refine their approach to ensure the project is manageable within the available time frame, facilitating successful project completion .

The word limit for the poster project is purposefully designed to encourage students to succinctly describe research concepts, a skill valuable for preparing publication abstracts and other concise communications . This constraint pushes students to distill complex information into its essence, improving their ability to focus on key points and communicate efficiently, which are critical skills in academic and professional research settings .

In their posters, students should balance technology description with conceptual analysis by providing a clear explanation of the technology's key characteristics and potential alongside insightful analysis of its performance and implications . This balance ensures the poster is informative yet accessible, highlighting both practical aspects and theoretical insights. It helps engage audiences with varying levels of expertise and facilitates a comprehensive understanding of the topic, a critical aspect of effective academic communication .

Graphical displays serve a significant role in this poster project by providing a visual understanding of the chosen technology . They are important as they can effectively communicate complex data, highlight key aspects of the technology, and enhance the overall clarity and impact of the poster, making it more engaging and accessible to the audience. Visual representations can simplify the presentation of intricate information, facilitating better comprehension and retention .
