Introduction
My name is Abdelaziz, and I am a German language teacher. This trimester, I have
had the privilege of teaching Level 2 in the Middle Years Programme (MYP) as well
as Grades 10 and 11 in the American educational system. This unique combination
has allowed me to adapt my teaching strategies to meet the diverse needs of my
students across different curricula.
Reflection on My Teaching Journey: First trimester
Journaling Reflection
Personal Growth as an Educator
This semester has been a transformative journey for me as a teacher. I have grown
in my understanding of the IB educational system, embracing its core principles of
fostering international-mindedness and developing the Learner Profile attributes in
my students. By focusing on 'communicators' and 'open-minded' learners, I have
tailored my teaching methods to nurture these traits in my classroom. This focus
has not only enriched my students' learning experiences but also deepened my
own awareness of the importance of being a reflective practitioner.
Teaching Methods and Strategies
One of the highlights of this semester was designing activities that made learning
German engaging and accessible for my students. I concentrated on creating
exercises with simpler language to cater to diverse proficiency levels. This approach
ensured that students felt confident in their ability to grasp the material, which is
crucial for second-language acquisition.
Another key strategy was incorporating relatable examples, particularly when
discussing complex topics like international-mindedness. For example, I
encouraged students to share their personal experiences with language and
culture, fostering a sense of connection and empathy in the classroom.
Challenges and Opportunities
Adapting to the IB framework in my second year posed its own set of challenges,
especially in balancing rigorous standards with student needs. However, the
professional development course offered by the IBO was instrumental in enhancing
my skills and confidence. The certificate I earned symbolizes not just completion
but a commitment to lifelong learning and excellence in education.
One recurring challenge was ensuring that all students were equally engaged and
progressing. Peer feedback sessions, guided by rubrics, proved to be an effective
tool for addressing this. These sessions not only improved communication skills
among students but also created a collaborative environment where they felt
supported.
