Properties and Reactions of Halogens

Group 7 elements, known as halogens, are non-metals that are highly reactive and toxic, with low melting and boiling points that increase down the group. A displacement reaction occurs when a more reactive halogen replaces a less reactive one in a compound, resulting in the formation of halides. The document also includes true/false statements and examples of displacement reactions involving halogens.

Group 7 elements

Elements in group 7 of the periodic table are known as the halogens.

I. Halogens’s characteristic (Đặc trưng của halogen):
1. Halogens are non-metals => do not conduct electricity or heat well.
2. low melting and boiling points.
3. very reactive and toxic.
4. As you go down group 7:
-

the reactivity decreases: Fluorine > Chlorine > Bromine > Iodine > Astatine
- the melting and the boilling point increases: Fluorine < Chlorine < Bromine < Iodine <
Astatine

II. A displacement reaction

- an element that is more reactive replaces another less reactive element in a
compound.
- In a compound, the -ne term of halogen is changed to -de term. These compounds
are known as halides
Example:
1. sodium bromide + chlorine → sodium chloride + bromine ( because chlorine more
reactive than bromine)
The chlorine change to chloride (-ne change to -de)
2. sodium bromide + iodine → sodium bromide + iodine (no reaction because iodine is
weaker than bromide)

Q1. The following statements are either true or false. State which are true and which are false.
a) Chlorine is an example of a halogen. True
b) Bromine is less reactive than iodine. False
c) Fluorine has a higher melting point than astatine. False because the Flourine has lowest
melting point.
d) Group 7 elements are all good electrical conductors. False
e) Group 7 elements are toxic and highly reactive. True
f) Group 7 elements have high melting and boiling points. False
Q2. Describe what a displacement reaction is.

An element is more reactive replaces less reactive element (in a compound).

Q3. The reaction below is a displacement reaction.

potassium bromide + chlorine → potassium chloride + bromine
a) Describe why a displacement reaction occurs.
Chlorine is more reactive.
b) Balance the chemical equation of this process by filling in the gaps:

2 KBr + Cl2 → 2 KCl + Br2

c) State one way that we might know that a chemical reaction has taken place.
Change color and temperature.

Q4. Complete the word equation for the displacement reaction between potassium iodide and
bromine.

Potassium iodide + bromine → potassium bromide + iodine

Q5. Complete the word equation for the displacement reaction between sodium chloride and
fluorine.

Sodium chloride + flourine → sodium flouride + chlorine.
