INTRODUCTION

(a) Project Title: Construction of a Modern Ladies Hostel at Kenya School of

TVET

The Kenya School of TVET has witnessed rapid growth in its student enrolment,
leading to an increasing demand for adequate and modern accommodation
facilities. Currently, the available hostels are insufficient to meet the growing
needs of students, forcing many to seek off-institution accommodation. This poses
several challenges such as high cost, insecurity, and the lack of a conducive study
environment.

To address these issues, this project outlines the construction of modern hostel
facilities with a capacity to accommodate 500 students. The development will
feature sustainable building practices, incorporate modern amenities, and provide
secure and comfortable living spaces aimed at enhancing the overall learning
experience at the Kenya School of TVET (KSTVET).

(b) Objectives:

 To curb the current accommodation problems faced by students.

 To ensure access to modern, well-equipped hostel facilities.
 To improve security for students by offering on-campus housing.
 To reduce commuting costs and time for students.

2. SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

(a) Boundaries: The project encompasses the construction of two multistorey

hostel blocks and associated infrastructure. These include access roads,
landscaping, drainage systems, water and power supply lines, waste management
systems, and security installations.

(b) Timeline: The project is scheduled to run over a period of 18 months, broken
down into the following phases:

 Planning and Design Phase – 3 months

 Procurement Phase – 2 months
 Construction Phase – 12 months
 Final Inspection and Handover – 1 month

3. SURVEY AND SOIL TESTING

Prior to the design and construction phases, a detailed topographical and
geotechnical survey was conducted on the proposed site. The survey revealed a
relatively flat terrain suitable for multistorey construction. Soil testing results
indicated a stable soil structure capable of supporting heavy structural loads. Key
findings included:

 Soil Type: Sandy clay with a high bearing capacity.

 Water Table: Found at a depth of 6 meters, manageable within standard
construction practices.
 Recommendations: Use of strip and pad foundations for optimal structural
support.

4. ARCHITECTURAL AND STRUCTURAL DRAWINGS

The design includes detailed architectural and structural drawings covering the
following aspects:

(a) Plan View:

 Ground floor layout with common areas, reception, and administrative

offices.
 Typical floor layouts for student rooms, washrooms, study areas, and
lounges.

(b) Elevation:

 Front, rear, and side elevations reflecting the building's aesthetic and
functional design features.

(c) Sections:

 Cross-sections through key building parts to show vertical dimensions,

material layers, and internal configurations.

5. BILL OF QUANTITIES (FOUNDATION ONLY)

(a) Site Clearance

 Removal of vegetation and debris – 1,000 m²

(b) Excavation
 Trench excavation for foundations – 800 m³

(c) Concrete Works

 Blinding layer – 100 m³

 Strip foundation concrete – 300 m³

(d) Reinforcement

 Steel reinforcement bars – 15,000 kg

(e) Formwork

 Shuttering and formwork – 250 m²

(f) Backfilling and Compaction

 Approved materials and compaction – 700 m³

6. METHODOLOGY

Construction Phase: The construction process will be divided into multiple

stages:

 Site Preparation and Clearance

 Foundation Works
 Superstructure Construction
 Roofing and Waterproofing
 Finishing Works (flooring, painting, fittings)
 External Works (walkways, parking, landscaping)

Type of Construction: The hostel blocks will be constructed using reinforced

concrete frames with masonry infill. This ensures durability, safety, and cost-
effectiveness. Prefabricated components will be used where possible to save time
and maintain quality standards.

7. CONCLUSION

(a) Risks and Mitigation:

 Delayed Approvals: Early engagement with relevant authorities and

continuous follow-ups.
 Weather Disruptions: Scheduling major construction activities during
favorable weather periods.
 Material Shortages: Establishing contracts with reliable suppliers and
maintaining buffer stocks.
 Labour Challenges: Hiring experienced personnel and ensuring good
working conditions.

(b) Recommendations:

 Establish a project management team to oversee all phases.

 Incorporate smart technologies such as keycard access and CCTV
surveillance.
 Engage students in the design process to cater to their preferences.
 Plan for future expansion and adaptability to changing needs.

Common questions

The project aims to incorporate sustainable building practices by utilizing durable materials such as reinforced concrete frames with masonry infill and prefabricated components where possible. These practices help reduce construction time and increase energy efficiency while maintaining high-quality standards. Sustainable approaches are crucial for minimizing environmental impact and ensuring long-term utility and cost-effectiveness of the hostel facilities .

The construction methodology, which involves site preparation, foundation works, superstructure construction, and coordinated finishing, aligns with the timeline of an 18-month project duration. Dividing tasks into staged phases such as site preparation, foundation works, and superstructure ensures that each segment can proceed methodically and efficiently. Prefabricated components further support this by saving time and maintaining quality .

Landscaping and external works, including walkways and parking, are crucial for enhancing the project's aesthetic appeal and functional quality. They facilitate a seamless campus experience by improving accessibility and mobility, contributing to the project's goal of providing a conducive and pleasant environment for students, potentially enhancing their academic and social experiences .

Integrating smart technologies like keycard access and CCTV can significantly enhance security and convenience for students. These systems allow for better access control and monitoring, reducing the risk of unauthorized entry and promoting a safer living environment, thus contributing to a more secure and efficient residential experience .

Engaging students in the design process can lead to more tailored facility features that meet their specific needs and preferences, enhancing comfort and usability. This involvement empowers students, potentially increasing satisfaction and fostering a sense of community ownership, which can improve their overall educational experience and school life engagement .

Planning for future expansion and adaptability is critical to accommodate increasing student numbers and evolving needs. An adaptable design allows the institution to modify or expand facilities without significant overhauls, ensuring ongoing relevance and utility. This strategic foresight supports sustainable growth and aligns with institutional long-term goals, ensuring infrastructural investments remain valuable over time .

Potential risks, such as delayed approvals, are mitigated by engaging early with authorities and following up. Weather disruptions are addressed by scheduling during favorable conditions. Material shortages are countered by contracts with reliable suppliers and buffer stocks. Labor challenges are managed by hiring experienced personnel and maintaining good working conditions. These strategies are comprehensive but rely heavily on proactive management and timely execution of plans, which may face implementation challenges .

The design features detailed architectural and structural drawings that include ground floor layouts with common areas, reception, administrative offices, typical floor layouts for student rooms, washrooms, study areas, and lounges. Elevation drawings showcase the aesthetics and functionality, while sections display various building parts' dimensions, material layers, and configurations .

The project's primary objectives are to curb current accommodation problems, provide access to modern and well-equipped hostel facilities, improve student security with on-campus housing, and reduce commuting costs and time. Achieving these objectives can create a more conducive learning environment by ensuring that students have secure, comfortable living conditions that are close to the school, thereby enhancing their focus and academic performance .

The soil type identified as sandy clay with high bearing capacity and a water table located at a manageable depth of 6 meters suggests that the site is suitable for multistorey construction. The construction will utilize strip and pad foundations, which are optimal for supporting heavy structural loads, ensuring durability and reduced risk of water-related construction challenges .
